M&P Blowing Up?

I went into a much respected firearms dealer in Phoenix AZ today looking for a IWB holster for my M&P c40. I was advised that They didn’t carry any supplies for the M&P due to their history of “blowing up” The sales person advised that Law enforcement departments who had switched from Glock to the M&P experienced malfunctions and barrel explosions. I have had my M&P for at least 3 years without any problems; however, I’m still concerned. Has anyone heard of an M&P blowing up?

That just might be the most outrageous rumor yet about the M&P brand. EVERYONE in the firearms world has heard of the infamous Glock KB's, and now some moron is trying to affix that label to M&P's.

According to S&W's own stock holder's reports, they are winning over 80% of the LE agency bids that in which the participate, and with over 600 agencies now carrying M&P's, we would surely have heard of this kind of issue.

I declare shenanigans.

Leads me to beleive that they area much respected for something besides their wisdom.

Sounds like another blind coolaid drinker to me. I've gone and searched hard on the web for any stories about the M&P and kabooms and every time the Glock keeps coming up. If there is a report of an M&P going boom I can't find it. Now granted other guns have blown up in the shooter's hand, but Glock seems to do it more than any other gun. Also, there is a reason why you are not supposed to shoot reloads through a stock Glock and need to purchase a aftermarket barrel to do so.

Take a look at the Gen4 Glock and tell me Glock isn't concerned with losing LE sales to the M&P.

This thread should be moved over to "The Joke of The Day" sub-forum.

So,you should have asked him if they sell supplies for the Glockabooms then.

The guys here at "my" local gun shop like their Glocks, but they step right up to sell me anything I want for my M&P's. ...and we do enjoy poking fun at each other

#10 ·
If the OP is concerned enough to join this forum and post such a RUMOR as his one and only posting he should be concerned enough to name the respected shop in question.

I would be more than happy to visit said respected establishment and validate, or not as the case may be, the claim.

More details OP.

And that's when it's fun. I love the 1911 platform and I have a friend who is die hard Glock, but we always manage to keep the mutual respect there. He recognizes that I like what I like and it works and I do the same to him. Too bad the entire shooting community couldn't be that way.

i agree. i've been surprised at the attitude when telling people about my m&P 40c. people act like i'm talking about a hi-point or something.

Sounds like typical Gun Store Guy Shenanigans. Take a little piece of a story, and extrapolate it into something that has left truth in the dust.

What he's probably referring to is the report of a broken barrel, where the barrel was broken in front of the chamber. As I understand it, that situation came about from the end user deciding to "polish the chamber" of his MnP with a Dremel tool. The goal was to improve feeding and extraction, the end result was removing too much material and wrecking the dimensions of the chamber, thereby causing the breakage.

Is Glock concerned about the MnP? I doubt it. It's awfully difficult to tell a guy who's worldwide backorder of guns is constantly in the tens of thousands of guns that he's doing something wrong.

Probably the same guy that told me he'd be happy to sell me a rail mounted light, but I shouldn't use it to light up someone who's in my house or semi truck sleeper because I could get charged with brandishing. I explained that I alredy had 2 flashlights for initial ID, and if I was going to use a weapon mounted light, we had already established that the person on the other end didn't belong there! Went back one more time and got treated like unwashed rif-raf as I'm not tactical enough, not carrying a Glock, hairs to long, beard made me look like a nut job, or some such, and haven't gone back since. No great loss! I believe AZ Tactical is a seperate business, renting space from Shooter's. Shooter's has decent people...

YMMV

Sounds like either this dealer is getting special incentives from Glock, one of those people who believe the Glock is the end all be all of polymer pistols or just plain ignorant about the M&P.

I do not begrudge people who like Glocks or any other competitor to the M&P because a person should be comfortable with what they shoot. However it is just juvenile to spread unsubstantiated rumors just because you do not like a particular brand.

This is something that has some credence. One of the local gun dealers said he would not put a Smith & Wesson Shield in his case, new or used because of the number of guns that have blown up. I asked because my Shield blew up the first of December and S&W are claiming it was a hot load. Too many M&P’s blowing up to make me comfortable anymore. Here is a picture of my gun.

#20 ·
There have been very few M&P's that have blown up, but any gun can KB with a hot load. Interesting that you post this picture with absolutely no details as to what happened.

Reminds me of one I ran onto where the owner claimed their new M&P blew up on new factory ammo, finally shown that it was a bad reload that blew it up. That person continued to blame the gun even after the truth came out.

GWCustoms... You're making the rounds to ALL the forums with this post, aren't you?

G56... Check the other S&W forum site for a bit more info.

Just goes to prove that when someone has something negative happen, they'll post it to every forum they can join. ;)

Within a Month, This 1 incident posted to (let's say 10?) various forums will be seen as an epidemic by someone who will say "I've seen recent reports of Shield KaBooms on numerous Forums... Should I be afraid?"

#24 ·
I was wondering how that happened!

Also, everyone knows Chris Costa started this rumor after getting 'Butthurt' over S&W NOT resigning his contract for this calendar year.

For the record, that was right before Costa signed a contract with Glock and went on Tour in Japan for an AIRSOFT company!

Chris Costa is now the buttend of a lot of jokes in the tactical training community.

I have and shoot my M&P's A LOT and they run exactly as advertised and then some... I run factory +p and have run +p+ loads with no issue. My wife also runs a Shield .40 and has no no issues.

I guess my truck would eventually blow up too if i ran a lot of shine through the tank instead of stopping at premium lol

#26 ·
I agree. There might be a bad one in a lot of 1000, but for a large number to be blowing up, I doubt it.

99% of all gun 'Kabooms' can be blamed on ammo. I know Magtech 9mm had some problems awhile back, as well as, BVAC 10mm ammo. BVAC was blowing the slides out of 1911s and not just the Delta Elites!
