My wife told me while i was looking at gun stuff last night "im planning on getting you a nice gun for christmas and i know nothing about them so why dont you pick one out and ill get it." Great right. so i have it narrowed down to a few...

1.) Remington R1

2.) Double Star's new 1911

3.) Dan Wesson CCO

4.) Kimber CDP Compact

5.) Springfield Armory TRP

6.) FN 5.7 FDE

anyone have any experience with any of these or their makers any info would be most helpful.

If it's in your price range, I would look at the S&W line of 1911 pistol. I have personal experience with one of their 1911PD models and it's OUTSTANDING for the price. Also, for a cheaper alternative, I would for sure look at the Taurus 1911. I've heard nothing but good thinks about them.

ive done the taurus route and wont again and my only beef with the sw 1911 is the external extractors. i dont like the look. but def. wanting a 1911 but also like the 20-30 round you can get in the 5.7

If It was me...I'd go the S&W 1911PD Compact route in a second. S&W isn't having any problems at all with the external extractors.

If not that, I'd get a Springfield loaded Champion.

I like my 1911's in Commander Sized Packages.

Frankly though all the 1911's listed are way over priced for what they are. The whole 1911 thing is getting to be about as ridiculous as the Harley Davidson RUBD (Rich Urban Biker Douche.) thing. In fact. With everybody that's come out with a wildly over priced, prestige 1911 in the past decade..I'm Shocked Harley Davidson isn't selling a 1911 with leather grips and Fringe around the magazine well for $1500.00 a pop. (With slides, parts and custom American Eagle Engraving, proudly made in the Republic of the Philippines of course.)

As far as I can tell the only difference between "Harley "Wild Hogs" and 1911 Wild Hogs is ones wearing a dew rag and chaps and the others wearing a Nighthawk Custom baseball hat in Coyote Brown.

Personally...I'd tell the wife I still loved her if she got me a M&P45c for half that money

i was thinking that last night while i was out looking do i really want to spend this much on a gun when i got get a mp45c and trick it out. still on the fence though i want a 1911 but dont want to spend a fortune on one.

The Remington R1 is a really nice 1911 for the price. I personally would get that....AND some ammo

i think that im gonna look at that today if anyone has one. i was thinking last night do i really want to drop around 2g's for a gun when i could get like the r1 and an 870 and still be cheaper than the ones i was looking at. plus she wants a shotgun for hd

There is one other alternative...

Fusion 1911 Kits

Spending the better part of 2011 building your own chopper from the ground up has a much lower RUBD factor.

The thought of spending the Anniversary year building a custom commander has crossed my mind once or twice lately.

If your wife spends a little less than $700 and buys a you a Slide and Frame kit. Buying the rest of the parts and finishing, either professional or home rolled. Over the course of a year should be a breeze.

Plus you end up with a 1911....Exactly the way you wanted it. Not how Springfield or Kimber thought you wanted it.

i have been think of that for a while even thought everyone has been talking me out of it. cause like you said and i thought i get what i want and not settling for one and not having to narrow it down cause this one has that i like but i like that feature better etc.

Go with a Springfield Armory Loaded (under a grand and one of the best), and a sweet 870... I'm not big on the TRP, but it is a great gun too.

I must agree my wife is doing the same, but for my birthday. It will be my first gun. I have to get the M&P9c What cleaner/protectant schould I use? C'mon Sept 22nd. Very excited, hear very good things. I guess in return I'll buy her the Bodyguard .380 auto. Gotta love our wives

i had the opportunity to shoot the fn 5.7 a few months ago. while it definitely has a nice feel to it, natural point of aim, light weight, low recoil, and quite accurate, i wouldn't consider one for myself. they're expensive, and the ammo is also expensive. now i don't know too much about ballistics, but i'm just not sold on the 5.7x28mm cartridge. of course, they're apparently pretty deadly, based on that mass shooting in fort hood last year. if i'm going to spend a grand on a pistol, i'd much rather have a 1911, if i have to pick one from your list.

as far as the manufactures you've listed, remington, dan wesson and kimber all make quality weapons. so does springfield, though they're not to my taste. i definitely like the idea of going for a less expensive 1911 and an 870 though. there's a huge aftermarket for 1911's, and you can always upgrade it. and as far as i'm concerned, nothing beats an 870 for hd.

Godsmack...since the OP was talking about his wonderful wife buying him the gun for Christmas 2010...I think you're a little late on your response...lol

+1 for the Kimber. I absolutely love mine, just wish I would have gone the 4" route instead of the 3". If you're not dead set on a 1911, I've been eyeing the FNP 45 Tactical. My local dealer called it a SOCOM on steroids.
