Well I got my very first firearm. It is a Smith and Wesson M&P 9mm full size. After looking at Springfield Armory, Glock, and a host of others, I settled on the M&P.

Took a NRA pistol class, and also got a Concealed Handgun Permit. All before Colorado's new stupid laws go into effect. Bought the gun, took the class an applied for my CHP all in less than a month. I'm probably on the NSA and DHS watch lists now. HA!

Fired the pistol for the first time a couple of weekends ago while down at my inlaws place near Salida. Their county has a public outdoor range right next to their trash landfill. My father in law kept saying things like "I like that gun" "It shoots real nice" and "I gotta get me one of those"!

It only has about 150 rounds through it so far - mostly reloads that my father in law had. Going back down this weekend. I need to find a range that isn't to expensive up here in the Northern Colorado (Greeley) area so I can practice more.

I want to replace the sights as my 47 year old eyes and trifocals can't see those silly little white dots very well. Still I am within an 8" circle - most of the time. Considering the Advantage Tactical sights or the XS Big Dot sights as a second choice.

Anyhoo, lurking through this forum helped me decide on an M&P. Look forward to learning more about my new piece of hardware.

The thumb safety on my Shield has grown on me. I like the added safety feature especially if a child stumbled unto a loaded Shield.

I advocate all firearms should be locked up when not on your person but accidents happen. Recently we read of a 4 year old by accident shooting to death his father. Would a thumb safety like the Shield prevented such a tragedy?

For those upset over a thumb safety on the Shield and not satisfied with leaving the safety in the fire position I have the ultimate solution - super glue. Yes you read right for a few bucks your worries forgetting to sweep safety or loosing the small motor skills in a life or death situation to disengage safety can be put to rest with a few drops of super glue on the safety.
I can't wait to hit the range! I have many things to ask and learn. Thanks!

My name is Drum and i am an addict with no control....

Been a gun "collector" for years, always an "old school" guy more interested in some ancient rusted relic from a heroic past over any "newfangled" and "improved" modern wonder weapon.

And then... something happened. I began to run out of ammo for my big smoke towers of yore. .303, 30'06, .30 Carbine, it suddenly occurred to me that this "surplus" was no longer surplus at all. Even weird old Euro pistol ammo had begun to climb into my squeal zone. .32 acp, once scorned by all and easily found in dusty crates in the corners of the best gun shops, is now climbing into the realm of modern defense ammo price-wise.

So... I decided to do a bit of purging. Panic times made it tough and embarrassing (for me) to set prices, so I set about offering my old gear for trade.
Quite by accident, I wound up with a M&P 15-22 in a trade for an E. German Makarov. What a stellar little gun! I quickly found myself wanting all the little AR related geegaws that I had always ignored for old school iron sights on my AR's.
This little temptress led me to wonder about what else S&W might be up to these days and, of course... the REST of the M&P line. You can probably guess the rest.

I traded my never quite loved G19 for a M&P 45 FS (w NS and Apex love) a few weeks later, then I traded my 1943 Lee Enfield for a brand new Shield 9 (my first brand new SW ever) at my LGS. The Shield was only a week old when I got it! WOW.
And now, I have a 45c on layaway at the KTP. Gonna go and pick her up as soon as I can get my new Maine State ID.

Hell, that one, which will be my 3rd M&P in about a month, is not even in my hands yet and I am already eyeballing an M&P 22.

Help me, my brothers! How can such an addiction be treated (other than by new guns and shooting)? Can it ever be cured?

Please stop me before I trade my '89 Colt Hbar for a SW M&P 15 that will match my 15-22!!!!

All I can do is admit I am powerless to fight my M&P addiction.

:blushing:

As a long time S&W fan, I have always loved the precision and excellence of the company's offerings in .22LR. Obviously, S&W has a long and venerable tradition of fine .22LR firearms.

Thus, it more than surprised me to learn that the current M&P in .22LR is made by someone else under contract. I have precisely zero reason and no wish to derogate Karl Walther or the products from that company. I have shot several and they are just fine.
I have read various places explanations that S&W could/would not tool up quickly enough to catch the consumer wave of "look-alike" .22LR firearms and contracted with Karl Walther to make the M&P 22. I have examined these closely and they look like fine firearms, but I am hesitant to buy one.

As an S&W guy, I am kinda wanting S&W to make this gun in-house. I have no objections to contract work or German guns in any way, but I know I would prefer to spend my money on a S&W that says "Massachusetts" or "Maine" on the side.

Does anyone here think that S&W will ever get around to making an M&P 22 in-house or does Karl Walther "own" the exclusive on this now? Probably, the easiest way to get S&W to make their own is to buy a German one. My luck they will be out with a US made version a week after that.

Cheers,
Drum

PS: First post, but been reading for weeks. Thanks for the great forum.

Hello all, Just picked up my first m&p this past week after shooting Glocks exclusively for years. I absolutely love the ergonomics and look of the m&p but the trigger will take some getting used to. I got it home, stripped it, cleaned it, and took it to the range to get some rounds through it.

I shot 100rds of PMC bronze 115gr and 300rds of Federal AE 115gr, didn't have a single failure, and shot some decent groups. The problem that I did experience was some very weak ejection. All of the spent casings were at my feet and bouncing off of my right arm, shoulder, and even my hat brim on their way down. The other problem that I ran into was when I went to clean the barrel I noticed that some of the barrel coating seemed to be chipping from the rifling at the crown of the barrel.

I was just looking to see if these are common problems with these pistols or if this is something that I need to get in touch with s&w about. At this point I'm hoping that I can resolve these issues without sending my gun back to s&w but it's not seeming likely. Thanks for your time, have a great day.
