29 years in the Tampa Bay area!!

What's TPD/PCS policy on concealed carry and traffic stops?

Always interesting to ask local LEOs!

Great question!

Be honest, don't risk it. In Florida it isn't required for you to inform the LEO, but if you don't and it's found... Well, it will be a longer day for you at the least.

If it were me, I would have my windows down, hands on my steering wheel, and say this "Hey man, just so you know, I have a CCW and I have a 9mm in my glove box/on my hip.

Some will go through a long drawn out ordeal of having you jump out of the car, and stay outside till the traffic stop is over. Some may have you stay in the car until another officer shows up to provide them backup while they talk to you. Worst case scenario, it takes you a few more minutes to get out of there, and you may end up with the gun and the mag separated in the trunk.

However, anything they do is nothing compared to what happens if you spook them. With all of the shootings, especially in Tampa, I would definitely not want to be on the receiving end of a worried LEO.

Undoubtedly the people on gun forums are not people that LEOs are hugely worried about, but hear this out.

Random traffic stop and everything is going well. LEO says I stopped you for going 45 in a 35, just need to grab your license insurance and reg. You, knowing there is a gun in the glove box and not wanting "the man" to know about your protected right to carry, have already grabbed out all three items and are proudly displaying them to your new friend. Your new friend looks at all the items (happens all the time) and sees that you just gave him/her your registration from 4 years ago. He/she goes, "hey bud, you have the current registration on you? This one is from 2009..." You think, oh god, I'm an idiot, and haphazardly reach into the glove box of which you forgot carries "Princess" your shiny .357 snub nose. You drop your glove box and as you realize what has now happened, a shiver goes up your spine and perhaps now an underwear change is in order because you have a pending feeling of a .40 police service weapon someone near the back of your body, perhaps even aimed at your head.
