anybody have some super inside info on this? im sure it they will fit...

we'll see.
I don’t have any super inside info…. But I’m pretty sure the magazines won’t interchange. I don’t think it would be much of a "compact" if it will take this monster magazine my .40 uses. Rumor is 10 rounds for the .40 and 12 for the 9mm.[/quote]

The idea isn't to carry it with the higher-cap magazine, but to have a 17 round spare. Also, if your carrying the subcompact as your backup gun, you'll be able to use the mags from your primary gun in it. That is, if they fit. Glock and XD subcompacts work this way...I think the M&P will too.

Being highly attentive to the LE market, the compacts are probably made for plain clothes carry, detectives and stuff or as a backup gun to an officer already issued a service gun. I guess it depends if compacts are single-stack models or not. I don't think they will be, it would take more retooling than shortening the slide, cutting down the grip and shortening the magazine. I hope I'm wrong and the compact IS a slim singlestack though!

With 10 rounds I doubt it.

Pretty sure like the others here the compact will be a double stack (and probably take full size magazines) There is a rumor I found that said S&W is looking into doing a single stack subcompact M&P.

Well, gotta go to the gym and workout. I really think it is helping with my shooting at the range (double benefit, since I'll be 57 next month, and would like to live a while to shoot my guns; now if I could quit smoking)!

Hey Buckeye: Think of the guns you could buy if you quit smoking. Eight years ago we (wife & I) quit smoking after many attempts. Used the patch which works pretty well, at least keeps you from kicking your dog (or cat). Cigs were cheaper then so I just put $5.00 in a envelope every day to reward us with something nice. We took a fun trip. Six months without smoking and you could buy a very nice gun.

We never even think about smoking now. Never thought I could drink a coldbeer (that's one word in Texas) without lighting up but no problem now.

Good luck! Go for it. It's worth it in many ways :!:

Based on the price of cigarettes nowadays, I could probably buy a new gun in 3 months! I keep telling myself, that by my next birtday (57th) I will quit. You'd think I'd learn, since I had a baloon angioplasty (spelling?) in 1996!

Your right, cigarettes have really gone up and your savings would grow much faster. When we quit, it was kinda fun to see the money increase daily in that envelope. I was 59 years old when I quit and I can't imagine what shape I would be in if I were still smoking. I only missed them the 1st couple of years (literally) but now I never think about it. You'll know your getting there the 1st time you realize you've gone a day without smoking and didn't think about it.

The trueth is, unless you just fall over dead someday, you will have to face quiting anyway at some time as you get older. It really is much easier (but not easy) now with the patches, gums and lozenges on the market today. Don't mean to be preachy but you should do it now and reward yourself with a new gun that you never would have considered buying before.

Also I would rather smell like gunpowder or Hoppes #9 than a ashtray.

Good luck, it's not as hard as you think once you've made up your mind to do it.

Jeez man! My tiny wife controls her .40 & .45 just fine. Go shoot a .40!!

Then tell us what you think. I wouldn't give you a nickel for a 9mm.

I've got a .40 in the full size. I'm talking about the compact and the ability to shoot quick follow up shots from a small pistol. To me, the .40 has more snap than any of my .45s.

I have a full size .357 that I love but my snubby is a .38. There's nothing fun about shooting a .357 out of a 2" barrel. Just my opinion...

That is my problem, I haven't convinced myself (apparently) that it is a choice I HAVE to make, to quit smoking. I love the smell of Hoppe's # 9 and I actually like cleaning my guns and re-loading ammo, almost as much as shooting.

Compact 9mm or 40?

I have to agree that in all other guns (except my M&P) I feel that the 40 is snappier than my 45 1911. But, I also feel that in a compact pistol, the 40 may be too much. I'm still on the fence about whether to buy the compact M&P 9, or wait on the 40. That is why I started this post. I think if we all disucss the topic here, in the end, we should all end up with the caliber in the Compact M&P that we, personally, feel most comfortable with.

Though I have not yet seen the M&P Compact, my usual concealed carry gun is a Kahr MK40, which is a bit smaller but of similar weight (23.1 oz without mag). I also have a Kahr P40, which is about the same size as the M&P Compact, but only 16.8 oz without mag. When I first started using the P40 the recoil seemed like a lot, but I was fairly new to handguns at the time, and up til I bought the P40 had mostly shot 9mm and .22, so just about everything seemed to have a lot of recoil. Now, after about 2500 rounds thru the P40 the recoil doesn't bother me at all. Even so, I can get the MK40 back on target faster, so that extra 6 oz makes some difference. Based on my experience with the two Kahrs, I would guess that the M&P Compact 40 would not be too bad with a bit of practice. I am probably going to get one when they are available. I have an M&P 40 for my night table and find it one of the most easily controlled and pleasant pistols I have ever tried.

M&P 40 or 9mm Compact?

Well, I have decided that a 40 caliber in any plastic compact pistol is too much. I much prefer the 9mm. Now, in the full size plastic pistols, I like the 40 nearly as well as the 9mm.

The compact pistols (in plastic), in my opinion, although they have the finger grip extension, still do not provide sufficent backstrap grip to feel comfortable in shooting the 40.

Go with the 9mm. I like the higher capacity, Cheaper to shoot so you will shoot more and become more accurate. Self defence, you find a nice JHP that could be just as good as 40. Thats my 2cents.

I have the 40....don't know where I heard it, but an old quote said...."never go to a gun fight with a caliber that doesn't start with a "4"" (or something close to that).

The benefits of the 9mm is that you have more rounds in the magazine and the cost to practice is less....but honestly, if you're in a situation where you need to draw your pistol, you'd probably not need the extra few rounds. I prefer the extra "umph". The cost is a difference, but I reload...so not that much of a difference.

I'm very tempted to buy the 9mm but I know that if I do then the 40 will suddenly appear.....!!!

The 9 is fine.....

I have a full sized 40 caliber MP but just bought the 9mm compact simply because it was the 1st one I could get my hands on. No regrets. I like them both and they both shoot great. There is no telling when S & W will come out with the 40 compact.

I hear the full sized 45 will be out in Feb. 2007. Maybe, by then, I'll be ready for my 3rd MP. 8)

And is it just me, or have I noticed the MP getting quite a bit more (positive) attention on the generic forums? Looks like these things are finally catching on!

I have been patiently waiting on the .40 compact as well.

I just know as soon as I buy the 9mm S&W will release the .40 and I can't affort both right now.

The one to choose is the one that you shoot the most accurately with. There ain't no replacement for shot placement!
