Extended mags for a 9c

I got a brain fart today and since I had little use for a 170mm extended mag, other than s---s and giggles when shooting against others on my range I decided to test something. OK, so maybe it helps no one; I'll chance it.

A M&P 9c takes the same 17 round mags as the full size version. So what would happen if I put a 170mm extension on a compact mag?

What got me to thinking about this was that I carry OB in a Maxpedition Fatboy and I was made once by a friend who saw my 1911 mags. Not good; if he made me others might also. Well the M&P mag has a lip that IMO is pronounced no matter how innocuous, and I'd recognize it. IMO I had to change it out.

So I tested it. The extension went on with no problem. I didn't use the extension spring as that tension wasn't required. I was going to use the spring from the 17 rnd mag. But having a compact mag and a 17 rnd mag apart they appeared to be the same length. So I just used the compact mag spring. Spring tension, to my hand, seems quite acceptable.

The net result is a mag recharge that holds 22 rounds and in the Fatboy it merely looks like a black box. No one could possibly see it for what it is. So with a 12 rnd mag in the gun and this as a recharge I see that as 34 rounds for a compact gun. Not too shabby for a compact with a spare mag. Hopefully it'll never be needed.

Just click the subdued "X" on the windows that come up below.

Various mags for the 9c. A finger grip mag installed. From left to right, the Taylor Freelance 170mm ext' in place, a 17 rnd mag with spacer, then w/o a spacer, and a compact 12 rnd mag'.

What it looks like from outside the Fatboy; very stealthy. No way to "make" it for CCW. The extended mag just fits the velcro closure.

FWIW, that's a Taylor Freelance 170mm extension. Maybe others will work, but that's what I had on hand when the brain fart hit me. IMO and due to the OB carry that I prefer it's a keeper.

Very interesting. I've not thought of this. I typically carry full 17rd mags as spares. Ive actually shot a 3gun match with the compact and full mags on my belt for practice. Have you practiced reloads under time with the Taylors?

I like the mecgar +2 basepads. On the compact, that gives 14+1 (almost the capacity as the vaunted glock 19), and the extension adds maybe half an inch on the back end of the gun

I've run two of them for over a year with about 500 rounds through one and 300 Rounds through the other. Only issue is one nag won't totally drop free, but that's an easy fix with sandpaper

When I carry my 9c, I carry a 17 rounder with X-grip for a reload, sometimes two of them.

I most often carry my reloads in my cargo pocket, as they have two "built in" mag pouches in each. Otherwise, I'll use a belt mounted mag pouch, as I have them for both single stack and double stack mags. I have a variety of carriers, with some made for IWB, some for OWB, and some for pocket carry.

I somehow lost track of this thread.

I haven't Jonny. The way I carry, in a Fatboy pack, I suppose it could be done, but it's not the best speed rig, even for the carry of the spare mag.

About the only way it would be a "speed rig" is by employing situational awareness and having my hand on the gun without removing it from the dedicated pouch.

I have considered having a comp' gun built on a 9c for use in Carry Optics. The gun itself is very soft shooting. Since slide length doesn't matter with an optic I see no reason it won't work and be softer shooting than my FS gun.

I did try a 17 round mag in the gun, but it gets fouled up in the opening on drawing it; it's just too large with it in place. It's just not reliable enough for carry in the Fatboy. Works fine as a second mag though. I just wanted more in a 2nd mag. Plus anyone in the know could potentially "make it" for what it is. The extended mag just looks like a black box. If I wanted to camo it a bit more I could gun paint it the same color as the pack. Then it would disappear from most folks eyes. I might just do that to gild the lily a bit.

Hmmm, Richie, you have me thinking. A smaller extension on a 12 rnd mag might work and be smaller than a 17 round mag. I never thought along those lines.

I sort of tried the 4(?) round extension on a 12 round mag' today. If it was any shorter than the FS 17 rounder I didn't notice it in my quick side by side. So I can't have more than 12 rounds in my 9c in my Fatboy.
