Why not? I carried a 3" 1911 for many years and before that a full size government model.

My favorite, by far, when clothing allowed, was a Mitch Rosen shoulder holster. But clothing didn't always allow for that. I'd also use a kidney OWB holster. I preferred a Yaqui slide type*. Then I discovered off body carry in a Maxpedition Fatboy. No matter what the weather or clothing I could carry. I stuck with that pretty much when carrying that gun.

An even more minimalist "holster" is something that can be made at home with a shoelace or para'cord. It just takes a short length to form loops for the belt. The distance between the loops is where the gun goes and is kept short to prevent the gun from falling through. It sounds nutty, but works great. You'll need to play with the knots and length to get it right. Once that's found I superglue the knots for a permanent holster. I prefer paracord for this. Be careful during the draw because there's nothing keeping your trigger finger off of the trigger. The gun can be put IWB to help prevent that problem somewhat but I always used it OWB. I especially like that homemade holster for really small guns.
