First time at range with new M&P 45

Well, I finally had the chance to shoot my new M&P 45. As long as I did my part, it shot superbly in terms of accuracy. At 21 feet it was putting them into pretty close to one hole. Of course I was using sandbags just to check its accuracy potential. But shooting offhand at 25 yards, it was also shooting very nice groups.

I did encounter some problems with failure to feed. Occasionally when I would reload and insert the magazine, there seemed to be some slop or play with the magazine in the butt of the gun. In other words, the magazine did not seem to seat firmly into the grip and had a little looseness in it. Then when I released the slide, the 1st round would jam. Often all I had to do to clear the jam was to tap the bottom of the magazine firmly. The round would chamber and the slide closed properly. Then the gun would shoot the all the rounds without jamming. Sometimes the 2nd round would have the same problem after I cleared the 1st round by racking the slide. Most of the time, the gun functioned without problems, but these issues were frequent enough to give me some concern.

What do you think? Is this a normal part of the breakin period, or was I doing something incorrectly, or is there a problem I need to have checked? Oh, I was firing the Winchester 230 grain FMJ bullets in the white box. I now have about 90 rounds fired. Couldn't stay at the range any longer because I had to get my wife back to work.

To add to Todd's list were you baby-ing the mags in or were you firm with them. I noticed that my mags are really stiff even after a few hundred rounds through the gun. Loaded to 10 they take a LOT of umph to seat on a closed action. Maybe you just weren't seating the mags firmly enough.

ToddG, yes I did clean and lube before shooting. And the problem did happen with both mags.

TAZ, I did give the mags quite a good rap to attempt to get them to seat tightly but they would not budge. Maybe I needed to give them a more enthusiatic nudge. I did notice that after the slide closed correctly on a chambered round that the mags felt much more solid and secure in the butt of the gun.

Thanks for the input.

My guess -- having only passing experience with the M&P45 -- is that the mags are just a bit too tight right now. M&P45 magazines seem pretty brutal until the spring has taken a bit of a set. Try loading only 9 (or even 8) rounds into the mag for now and see if that clears the problem up. If so, load both mags and keep them loaded 24/7 whenever you're not shooting (assuming it's legal for you to do so). After a week or so they should be much easier to load and hopefully your problem will go away.

The results you describe mirrors almost exactly my own when my 45 was new and I was a new shooter. The 45 has over 500 rounds through it by now and I've become more confident and competent in my gun handling when changing magazines. I've not had a FTF since. I don't know whether the pistol has matured or I have or both. I now have six magazines and they are all loaded with 10 all the time.

Hope this helps.

Mine has the same problem but I will take it further. After shooting almost 500 rounds thru it it had gotten worse, with FTF ever 3rd round, I sent it back via S&@ advice today and they said they will take care of the problem. The only reason I even considered it was a gun problem is that I had a master smith try firing it thru 3 clips and it was doing the same thing for him.

Thanks for the information. Sounds like I need to put some more rounds through the gun. I don't know if this is related or not, but right now I can't get 10 rounds in the magazines. The spring is too stout or my fingers are too weak, but they do seem to be getting a little easier to load. I have been keeping them as full as I can load them. I can get 9 rounds in them now much easier than I could a week ago.

In the future - 2 things -

Pop the mags apart.. easy RTFM, clean and then lube - militec-1 works great..after a while dry all off and re-assemble.

Use an Uplula mag loader. Works fine, lasts long time.

I had a few FTFeeds with my 45 the first time out but haven't had any problems 900+ rounds later. I don't think you have anything to worry about...except the rising cost of .45 ammo
