+1 Luke. The conversion barrel is a much better choice, but the extra cost has a lot of folks (especially in this economy) looking for a cheaper option. It's really no suprise that a reasoned explanition would be disreguarded when it gets in the way. My wife and I took a trip yesterday to celebrate our 29th anniversary. Before we got on the road I decided to check the oil and found a dry dipstick, what I would call an "out of spec" situation. There were no observable signs that the oil was low, but I decided to add a couple quarts anyway even though it costs me more money. Turns out it took 3 quarts, at that point I realised the situation could have got a lot worse, real quick. Don't be that guy. - - - - - - - - Sorry TOF. My ASME certificate doesn't cover pistol barrels specifically, just nuclear stress analysis. Just because it's good enough for certifying stress reports for nuclear pressure vessels internationally, doesn't make me an indisputable authority here. With all the rain lately my lawn is looking like a field. So the other day I figured it was time to mow the grass. My tractor is designed to mow in 3rd gear but I was in a hurry and figured if I used 4th or 5th I could get done much quicker. Just to make sure it was safe at the higher speed I called the manufacturer and asked the CS rep if I could use 5th gear to mow. He didn't know but said the company really didn't recommend it so, No I shouldn't do that. I then went onto a couple mowing forums and read several posts from people saying they had mowed their lawns at high speed just fine so I figured it must be safe enough to at least try it. When I asked a question about it, I got a lot of rebuttal and negative comments. One guy said anyone doing that was nuts and another said I needed a conversion blade that revolved 2x faster to keep up with the forward rotation of my tires, provided I had the right tread pattern. Others warned I might come unglued and tip over on the turns. I went ahead anyway and started mowing, I cautiously shifted to 4th gear... after a while I shifted to 5th ... I was buzzin- clippings were flying out the ejection port and I was getting the job done in record time. When I finished, I was thankful I hadn't tipped over, the mower was solid as a rock and I was ready to go online and report my success. As I stood back to admire my work I noticed the results weren't quite as good as before. There were strands of half cut grass sticking up here and there and I had missed a few spots at the higher speed but overall it was good enough for my purpose and the mower didn't break down or anything. Now that I know what it's like, if I want nicer results, I'll go back to using third gear... ..................... I do agree with you KR, that the conversion barrel is the better choice for many of the reasons you described, if they are indeed addressed in a conversion barrel. I agree primarily for reasons of improved accuracy. However, I don't yet think it is not safe to shoot an OEM barrel swap. I also don't know if I am ready to concede that the few thousandths slap at the barrel extension during dwell time contributes to barrels cracking at the stress riser, the more I consider it, I suppose it is one possibility but I would first blame a bad batch of barrels. ...please pass the plate of crow, I'll have a small nibble. Does anyone have any opinion as to which is better between the Storm Lake or KKM conversion barrels?

| I have not seen anyone make comparison tests. The "fit and finish" of the KKM seems better to me, but I happen to own two Storm Lake Barrels. Storm Lake has way more options listed and the prices are generally less, but the KKM looks better.

I think anybody who is lazy/cheap/crazy enough to just drop a 9mm factory barrel in their 40 and shoot away should be allowed to do do. Our constitution still allows us to make most stupid choices of our own free will, and then allows the freedom of speech to blab about them online. When considering the sheer violence, pressure, torques, and proximity of these actions to parts of my body I hold dear... Like my fingers and eyes... I will choose to spend a few bucks more on the proper conversion barrel. If YOU decide that the safety of your body parts is less important than the $60?? difference between "pretty safe" and "completely safe"... then save the $60 and buy a factory 9mm barrel! Good luck! ;-) Jeff |
