This is a discussion on Old vs new, some observations FWIW within the MP Full Size Pistols forums, part of the Smith & Wesson MP Forum category; I bought my first M&P9 in 2008, sometime later traded it off (don't know why really) in my quest for the perfect semi-auto. Fast forward ...

| Old vs new, some observations FWIW
I bought my first M&P9 in 2008, sometime later traded it off (don't know why really) in my quest for the perfect semi-auto. Fast forward to yesterday; I just bought a new M&P9, Serial number DXW****, no ILS, no mag safety, no thumb safety model. For those interested in how it compares to my 2008 model, and if I have noticed any differences, well---not really. On the new M&P9 the "Stainless" engraving is missing from the slide, the sights are a little different from my early model, including a cocking notch (my guess) or ledge of some kind. Fit 'n finish seems as good as ever. The trigger.....not much difference at all from the 2008 model, in fact, if memory serves me right, the new guns' trigger seems a touch heavier in pull--but I'm gettin old, so take that observation with a grain of salt. There's no sort of "revision" upgrade there, as far as I can tell, but I never thought the original was that bad to begin with. I've been shooting striker fired pistols since the late 80's (Glock, Steyr, S&W) so I'm used to less-than-stellar triggers. I did notice that some dry firing seem to loosen things up quickly--just as I had remembered of my 2008 M&P. This weekend I'll do some shooting. Hopefully this new pup shoots as well as my 2008 version did, it was quite accurate. Stay tuned... Last edited by stepheninaz; July 31st, 2012 at 06:25 AM. |

Another tid-bit I forgot, and I may or may not be right about this; the barrel crown seems nicer/better done (IIRC) than the early M&P9. Maybe someone can verify this for me.

Looking at pics of older M&P's my new barrel definitely has a different muzzle profile. It's not a rounded muzzle, but cut flat (almost flush with the slide face), and then "bevel" crowned (probably the wrong term, but the best I could come up with). Interesting.

Congratz on getting another M&P9. I love my M&P45. I got a chuckle out of the "quest for the perfect semi-auto" I believe there is no such thing. and as far as this staement is concerned "I've been shooting striker fired pistols since the late 80's (Glock, Steyr, S&W) so I'm used to less-than-stellar triggers." You my friend have obviously held or fired an FNH FNS-9. This as close as I have found to the perfect semi-auto. It has none of the usual striker fired trigger BS going on.
