Planning my purchase so I can......

Been leaning heavily to the .40 Pro 5", more for the 5" than anything. I've carried a XD Tactical for years and prefer a longer sight radius and IMHO it helps with accuracy and muzzle flip. Being 6'4, 250 and a casual dresser I've never really had a problem with concealment. Hard part was finding any holster that offered full coverage, which I'm a stickler about, for the XD Tactical. Hoping it would be easier for an M&P!
I want to swap the sights for the Truglo TFO. Do they fit the 5" Pro? I've been looking at sights, some say they don't fit 5"/L M&Ps
Probably change the guide rod to at least SS and perhaps the spring too. I've read that the 5" only needs the 4.25 guide rod on some forums?? Why?? Would there be a benefit to changing the spring??? If so what #?
I may end up with the Apex trigger set-up...... Think I'll do some polishing and break it in first before deciding.

Any thought and ideas would be appreciated!

The 9mm fanbois will tell you that the 9mm is a better choice because it's cheaper. If cheap is your chief concern, then they're right. For more choices including (but not limited to) additional power, more consistant penetration, and/or flexibility is a significant concern then 40S&W is the better option.

They absolutely do fit. All the M&P pistols, Shield to Pro, will fit the same TFO sights (model TG131MPT).

They're already SS, nothing to change there.

That's all it needed, it's also compatable with the f/s and L models.

Lighter recoil spring increases slide velocity for faster cycling, about the lowest you can go is 13 lbs. with the factory striker spring. For defensive purposes there's really no reason to change it.

Thanks for the reply KR.
I'm a fan of the .40 so that's certain. But I've been looking locally for the 5" Pro and so far no luck, even with their suppliers. A couple of places online I've purchased from before are out. Guess the waiting game begins.

The waiting could be over, because Bud's Gun Shop has them in stock right now.

A Footnote on TFO on Shield...

As an installer of the Tru-Glo TFO sights, while technically you can install them on the Shield, the rear sights are too wide for the more narrow Shield, and will overhang past the width of the slide creating a "snag" point.

That is something a file and some cold blue will take care or easily enough.

For a CCW, I'm not convinced the extra 5" is worth it. I've shot 4 and 5 inch guns with no real difference in accuracy out to 20 yds. I got the 5" for IDPA and other than the sight radius, I don't think there is a major accuracy shift. Even that will certainly improve once match barrels are available for the M&P. I'm considering picking up 4" 40 to replacement G23.

Almost everyone agrees it's not a "major accuracy shift", it certainly won't make a good shooter out of a poor one, but there's more than enough evidence to argue that it has provided an improvement in accuracy for quite a few folks (specifically, those who are already shooting sub 3" groups at 25 yards). Especially in competition, where loading ammo for one specific firearm can increase your score by 10% (or more), the little bit of accuracy a 5" sight radius introduces has the potential to improve your score significantly (as in picking up a pistol certificate from the prize table instead of a set of Rossi sights, or a mag pouch for a gun you don't even own).

For self-defense applications, the 5" barrel increases velocity with factory ammo. So the SD bullet that clocked near 1150 FPS at the muzzle from a 4" barrel is now bipping along at that same rate almost 15 yards from the muzzle. That effectively allows standard pressure ammo to perform like +p ammo, and +p like +p+...

Buds shows em in stock for VIP members, what ever that is. I've purchased 6-7 guns from Buds thru the years, never been a VIP member. I click on the VIP button and it loads a screen with no info about how to become one.
However, I was actually looking at their lowly civil servants site. Extra mag and cheaper price but out of stock.

Just checked Gallery of Guns, they only have the standard 4.25" barrel model in .40.

I really wanted to get the M&P pro series in 9mm, waited a month for my three local gunshops to check with their distributors, when none were available I picked up a standard 4.25" 9mm. I did have a friend get a .40 Pro series. He waited 4 months for it, local shop found it at some small distributor over in the Pacific NW, in Oregon I think. After saying all that, if you're willing to wait, they do pop up every now and again. Good luck hunting one down!

VIP is for folks who want to purchase high demand firearms. It costs about $25 to join, click here for more info.

Or just buy one of the 5 M&P40 Pro 5" for $564 (178032) they currently have in inventory.

Sounds like you haven't tried it on a Shield yet. There are quite a few of us in this forum who have and are less inclined to call it a "'snag' point". But, as Jason mentioned, the part that does extend past the contour toward the top of the slide is easily contoured if you're so inclined.

Last time Buds Police Supply had the 178032LE in stock they were $475. That's almost $100 less and an extra mag! I have some patience, I'll wait for a while and see if they got some more in.

FYI: The TruGlo TFO sights for the M&P are designed for the 4" gun. The height of the front sight is about 0.02" too short for the 5". That said, I run a 0.02" "too short" front sight in my competition gun, because I prefer a higher point of impact in relation to my front sight. The factory from in the 5" is 0.180". The factory height in the 4" is 0.016".

I run a 0.160" front in my Pro, which produces a POI right at the top of the front blade, instead of "behind the dot".

On top of the front sight is where I place my target, not behind it, so that should work out fine for me.
