hot brass to the nose

I got my M&P 9mm the other day and quickly ran to the range to send some lead down range. I ran through 200 rounds fairly quickly but did find one quirk that I'm not sure if it's something I'm doing wrong or just the way the gun is. It ejected quite a few rounds back towards my head. 4 or 5 hit me square in the nose, 1 or 2 hit my glasses and some were bouncing off the bill of my hat and others were hitting me in the right shoulder. Some of them could have ricocheted off the wall but most of them I could watch coming straight back.

Anybody else have this issue?

Shoot it someplace with no range partition right next to you if possible. I'm guessing the majority are coming off the partition. If it IS ejecting straight back, and decent gunsmith may be able to adjust the pattern a bit, but I'm guessing, from experience, most are coming off the wall.

I had the same problem. I put 500 rounds through mine, and maybe had two hit me, and I was outdoors with nothing within 10 feet of me to my right or left...it wasnt that big of an annoyance to me honestly. Probably something to do with the dimensions of the cheap brass I was shooting, didnt get ejected right. Just my 0.02.

Might be the ammo. What were you using?

Sometimes I buy cheaper ammo and when my wife shoots her FS M&P 9 the ejected rounds hit her right in the forehead. That doesn't stop her shooting though.

It sure didn't stop me but I really wasn't a fan of it.

I was using the federal ammo from Walmart that runs 12.97 a box of 50.

I have the FS 9 and the M&P22. I've used the same ammo in each since new - Federal Champion 115g for the 9mm, and CCI Stingers for the .22. Case ejection on my 9 has always been straight to the right. On the 22, it ejects either straight right or straight back towards my face where from time to time, a spent case will hit me in the face. When my wife shoots the 22, I've seen more often for her the spent case coming straight back towards her which leads me to believe that my wife may be limp-wristing the gun. I waiting for the day went a hot case goes down the front of her shirt. She already has one go down the back of her shirt, causing a nice burn mark with a blister.

I've had Speer Lawman brass bounce off a partition and lodge itself between my cheek and eyeglasses. What a wonderful feeling to have hot burning brass give you a nice little burn on a day you forgot to mention to the better half that you were going to the range...

I had the same problem with same ammo and cheap ammo but after about 2-300 rounds it completely stopped. Haven't had a problem since although I miss it. It was funny watching my wife shoot it with that problem.

I have a FS 9 that does the sames thing - repeatedly. However, I find it makes cleaning up the brass much easier... all I have to do is empty my FRONT POCKET!

I went this weekend and put another 100rds through mine and didn't have one come straight back. I'm wondering if it was something that just needed a little break in time.

Brass to the right arm/shoulder/cheek is an old problem with some 9mm full size M&P's. I solved it by installing a 15lb Wolff recoil spring and staying away from aluminum cased ammo. So I figured, I like the M&P well enough, why not buy a 9mm compact for carry? Same problem! Except now, the solution is harder to come by. I can't find anyone who sells lighter recoil springs for the compact.

This is normal - specially for the m&P40. Needs break in which is up to 500 rounds. Just keep on shooting and it will be fine.

Could need to be cleaned. Might be a bit of limp wristing ? It does go away with time though...

I sure hope so. My daughter refuses to shoot the compact because she's had a few empties bounce off her face. I'm pretty sure we're not limp wristing because it's not happening with the full size M&P or the Glock or the Sig Sauer.
