Gentleman came off the range and said our rental .40 had something wrong, "Here, drop the slide." I looked and the left-side slide release was missing so I had to use the right-side one.
Upon examination the exterior tab was completely snapped off, it didn't appear to have been torn or even have any metal fatigue; just a bright, shiny edge as though it had been sawn off.
Guess it's a good thing the M&P has ambi- slide release, or they'd have to slingshot the slide.
That is a common problem. There is a design/manufacturing flaw that causes a weak point on the left side. It is a minor issue, unless you are left handed.
Yeah, they break, but it's called a slide stop. As long as the slide still stops it won't hurt the function of the firearm. Replace it yourself, have S&W fix it or just keep shooting.
From a thread on another forum, this seems to have been a "not unusual" problem with an earlier version of the slide-stop. The design has evidently been changed, giving a larger radius on the bend in the metal stamping to cut down on the stress at that point, but I don't know when the change went into production. Any replacement parts should be the new version.
What's so terrible about being forced into advancing the slide correctly? If this had happened to a left hander, in a defensive situation, during a reload... improper training might have taken another life.
