The Storm Lake conversion barrel fits perfectly. I put a caliper on the two barrels and they are identical in dimensions. There is a slight difference in the feed ramp. Appears that the SL conversion barrel is slightly wider. Also a slight difference at the base of the forward lock-up tang.

Here's some comparison pictures between the stock 40 cal and SL 9mm conversion barrels.

Just saying thanks...

Just saying thanks to everyone who contributed to this discussion.. Bought my first M&P recently and was thinking of converting from 40 to 9 for practice and to help reduce target shooting costs. The information in this thread answered a lot of questions and concerns I had, and helped me make the decision to "pull the trigger" on getting a conversion barrel.

9mm conversion

I just got my bar sto barrel from brownell last week. got to get to the range and try it, also got 2 S&W 9mm mag's today from greg cote. they were cheaper than brownell's even with my discount. if you got to do it do it right.

I remember back in the day when you welded to the 1911 barrel to tighten up the fit so could one use a stock s&w 9mm barrel and weld to fit the hood to make as safe as a storm lake barrel?

I havent been able to find one at all anywhere.

Adding that much heat to the chanber could have a significant effect on the margin of safety. Keep in mind that 9mm/40S&W/357 Sig are almost twice the pressure of those 45ACP barrels you used to weld on.

Good point.

So is it unanimous that a s&w 9mm barrel is a no no for the conversion ?

I doubt it will be unanimous, as some folks will swear that the stock 9mm barrel will "work just fine". However, the conversion barrel is the safe and proper way to shoot 9mm out of a .40 s&w. Hope this helps!

I have a Storm Lake conversion barrel for my full size .40. I just got it recently(used)
with a couple of new 9mm mags. I've only shot 100 rounds through it so far, but those rounds
were accurate and without incident. zero malfunctions.
I'm hoping to get back out there maybe tomorrow after work and shooting another
50 rounds with it. so far so good here.

up to 400 rounds now, the storm lake barrel has performed flawlessly in my FS .40]
I have someone local to me who has a .40C with a 9mm and a .357 barrel and 9 mags.
Very tempted

Thank everyone, this is why I just got the Storm Lake barrel from Brownells and mags from Midway. Can't wait to get the range.
