Which full size to get?

Howdy all. I wasn't sure if there was a specific area for this or not so please feel free to move it if needed.

I've been carrying my shield for over a year now and I love it. My full size right now is a Sig sp2022 and I really want to get an M&P.

My question is which one?

I do not shoot competitively right now except for sporting clays and skeet. I do have the gear to do 3gun in the future and I am interested in doing IDPA or USPSA but I don't know when.

So for now this would be my bedside gun and my practice pistol.

I am contemplating getting the pro CORE so I can eventually put a reflex sight on it in the future but that won't be for a while or if ever. I really don't have a need for it right now but I really just like the looks of it and think it would be addition if I started to compete.

Is there really any reason to get the pro/core versions if you're not competing? Or would I always regret not getting the competition version?

Thanks in advance for any help

The trigger on the CORE and the PRO still suck, but the core does have the machine work already done. I own a pro and did the drop in poly trigger from Apex and trimmed the spring a bit. feels great and shoots great. If you don't want the headache of refinishing and machine work then go with the core. Otherwise get the standard fs and snag an Apex set up, and sights to your liking.

Congrats on wanting another M&P.

Having just started in USPSA Production class myself, here's my .02!

I have a regular 4.25" M&P 9mm that I've been using for comp, but wanted a little more, so I started thinking Pro 5", CORE 5" or the new PC Ported CORE 5" model.

Here's what led me to buy the Pro over the CORE and the PC Ported CORE. If I were to put an optic on the pistol, which the CORE and PC Ported are designed for, that just moved me from Production to OPEN division. No way is a $6-800 gun going to be competitive with the STI's and Infinities. Plus, I'm just not ready for that class either.

The optic on either CORE can be beneficial for steel shooting if that's available in your area.

So, I bought a new holster, ears and a few other goodies with the money saved.

Remember, this is just my opinion. Good luck choosing OP.

I went the other way and started with a M&P40 FS then this year got a Sig SP2022 in 40. I will say that the 2022 out of the box will spoil you. That trigger in SA mode is fantastic. It sits at the back of the housing and breaks right at the stop. If you get an Apex FSS kit, you will almost have the same experience. A little longer, but a little lighter so one makes up for the other. Of course the length of the 2022 DA pull really takes some getting used to and you want to make sure you practice it or you'll simply jerk it just to get that darned first shot off (or make it a practice to cock the hammer back on the first shot).

The Sig has a slightly higher bore axis, but is heavier and absorbs the recoil a little better than the lighter M&P. With 9mm, the recoil is so light that neither makes much of a difference.

I think either gun would make a fine choice, but you need to consider the added cost of the Apex trigger for equal performance. You could shoot the M&P without the Apex upgrade (I did for 3-1/2 years), but as almost everyone else said, it really makes the M&P a much better shooting gun for range use. For SD use, it shouldn't matter.

It's really fun to shoot either and they are so close and so good that if I only had to have one, it would be a coin toss and I wouldn't miss either one because the other is still completely satisfactory.

Best wishes on your choice.

I own 5" C.O.R.E. I had visions of putting an RMR on , but have not. I shoot IDPA with it.

The factory trigger still was not as good as an APEX kit.

I like the stippling on Pro Series over non Pro.

If you are going to put an optic on it, go with a C.O.R.E. If not, you can build nicer than a Pro series with aftermarket parts and stipple yourself.

The std APEX USB's do not fit the C.O.R.E.. If you get an APEX kit, be aware of this. They do have USB's that do work with the C.O.R.E. however.

Lots of great info and I really appreciate all the responses!!

@rsrocket1 you are totally correct, the trigger on SIGs is just amazing out of the box. Everything I've read has definitely led me to need to put an apex trigger if I get a new one. I haven't had a problem with my shield right now but I don't shoot it often.

I really don't like the high bore axis on the SIG, that's basically my only problem with it. The most accurate gun that felt the best in my hand was the cz75 sp01. But I couldn't handle the small slide.

@lhawkins - thanks for the great info. I've always put hogue grips on all my weapons so the stippling really doesn't matter to me. (unless for some reason the hogue adds too much thickness)

I'm gonna give it a couple months and hopefully be able to get some trigger time on a couple of different models to see how they are and the triggers too.

Thanks again to all! Happy holidays

Also keep in mind the increased sight picture which usually results in increased long term accuracy with the 5 inch barrel/long slide.

That's a "no cost freebie" with the 5 inch Pro!!!
