Question M&P Barrel Suggestions

Compatriots,
I'm looking for some input on after market, more accurate, barrels for a 5" M&P9L Pro Series C.O.R.E. I tried the Apex barrel, but had problems with it fogging the optic.

What else is out there that is worth a look. Needs to be accurate and reliable.

thanks

As far as I know, APEX is the only maker to address the problems with M&P accuracy. I am not aware or any other makers that offer custom fit barrels for M&P

Yup, it's Apex. Any other is a copy of OEM.

That happens to me also, but I'm fairly certain that it happened with the S&W barrel too. I bring optics cleaner and some lens tissue. I haven't had to use it yet because it hasn't gotten bad enough.

Problem I am running into is it fogs the optics bad enough on a high round count stage that it affects the ability to see through the optic. Can't stop mid stage to wipe the optic clean...

I believe wilson combat and storm lake barrels make after market barrels for the m&p. I don't know if they are more accurate than the OEM barrel.

I don't think it's the barrel, but primer pocket leakage. I've never been able to check it during a match when it happens. But I use range brass and some guys shoot brass that's junk and just don't pick it up rather than throw it away.

I had a Wilson barrel and it duplicated the OEM barrel. If it was more accurate it was only by a hair.

What kind of optic? I'm running a Trijicon RMR07 on my C.O.R.E. and it only fogs when I go from a cold environment (air conditioned building) out a door into a warm, very humid environment, same as a pair of glasses.

LSW, I'm running an RMR 06 on mine and it's not a fog, more of a smoke haze. I'll shoot 100 rounds with no problem then on a stage it'll be there while I'm shooting.

But maybe the OP has a different experience. His experience sounds worse than mine. I can shoot through my haze but it is disconcerting when it happens.

Smoke haze is probably a better description. This issues is not due to the changes in environment like glasses are prone to suffer from.

Tried several different factory and reloaded ammo with the same problem.

I appreciate the feedback on the Wilson barrel, I was looking at one of them as an alternative.

I have Wilson barrels in two of mine; a M&P9 and a 9c.

Both shoot great, but I don't know how changing a barrel would relate to your smoke/fog optical sight issue.

It might make a difference with an Apex barrel. The design is such that it keeps the breech closed until after the bullet is out of the barrel and the pressure has dropped. That's why it cures M&Ps that have accuracy problems. In the videos it's called "dwell".

I don't know of any pistols that unlock before the bullet has left the barrel, and pressures drop.

The results wouldn't be pleasant.

Absolutely correct if it unlocks far too early. I put a further explanation there referencing the dwell that Apex builds into their barrels. It keeps everything locked up longer than an OEM barrel; that's why they're more accurate. It might also decrease whatever is causing his sight to get smoked because of the increased dwell. To my mind it has to be gas under pressure, but where is it coming from? The primer or premature unlocking? But I know that even with an APEX barrel mine does it once every 100 rounds. I'll be shooting a stage and I go from a clear window to one that's smoked. But if he's using factory ammo I doubt that it's the primer. That can only leave one possibility if it's gas under pressure. Maybe it's not bad enough to cause a catastrophic failure. If the barrel unlocks and ejects the brass just as the bullet is exiting and the pressure hasn't fully exhausted itself that could cause it. Since he's used other brands and loads and it happens with them all, the common denominator is the gun itself.

FYI, Wilson states they're getting 1/2" groups at 25 yards during their testing. I'm just repeating what they have listed on their website.
