New M&P with chip out of barrel, defect? Need advice please.

I thought it was ok but a friend is concerned and now so am I. This M&P 9mm fullsize was purchased new this year there is a defect in tbe barrel almost like a chip out of it but looks like a manufacturing defect that either slipped through QC or they just have standards that allow such defects.

I sent pictures to S&W and they "think" it is ok but say I can send the entire firearm in if I want it looked over which from what some posts in some forums say, I doubt they will replace it and rather just waste my time.

Walther just sent me a barrel once cause of an issue where the extractor cut is but S&W has so many factory restricted parts that they cant send barrels out anyway.

So here are some pictures if anyone wants better images or other angles with size shown etc just let me know.

Thanks for looking!

If they think it's ok then that means there is a chance it's not keep calling till they replace it!

My personal opinion...I would call that strictly cosmetic in nature, except its on the inside of the pistol where cosmetics aren't an issue. The pistol is a tool, every pistol you look at will have rough areas on the inside of the pistol, no pistol is perfect.

It would not bother me either, but I would send a picture of it to S&W. The reason is, all though it looks safe and would not be a concern. I would still wonder if there is other defects in that barrel that could make it unsafe ?

Probably not by looking at it, but it does make me wonder.

S&W says they think its ok. I sent pictures to a well respected custom parts maker who thinks judging by pictures its ok too. So Im assuming it is. S&W wont say if they will surely swap it out if I send it in and considering they said a cracked frame gun was safe to fire once I doubt its worth sending in as they wont do anything about it Im guessing.

Hate they have so many factory restricted parts though.

Thanks everyone! !!

If your really worried have the barrel NDT tested for cracks.
You will know for sure that way.

At a gunsmith or send it somewhere? If it cost much at all then Ill look into an Apex barrel.

What are acceptable brand barrels to buy for the M&P? Might get a threaded barrel anyway for when I apply for a suppressor.

Thanks.

On the Walther I had, they sent me a barrel based on pictures of it, I was able to cheaply buy direct parts for anything I wanted from all springs to trigger bar/trigger etc. Yet S&W cant send you even a barrel or trigger bar or slide stop or trigger return spring etc. Even told they wont send a barrel to a gunsmith etc... Too many restricted parts. Not sure why this is?...

New M&P with chip out of barrel, defect? Need advice please.

You can do it yourself but for one barrel the die pen kit is pricey.
Your gun smith may do it as well or You should be able to find an ndt test company near you.

Personally, i wouldnt even worry about it. But if you`re not happy with it, buy the APEX barrel for your gun and be done with it. You might even kick up a nice brand new take-off barrel on ebay or maybe gunbroker dot com fairly cheap. Some guys will sell their barrel out of a brand new gun when they`re building some custom toy for themselves.
