M&P 9 Pro 5" accuracy decline

My M&P Pro 5" is a couple years old now with about 10K rounds through it, and I've recently started noticing some severe accuracy problems. I put it on paper at 50 feet and where it once shot cloverleafs, it now groups like a shotgun- 4 to 5 inch groups. I suspected the barrel was worn out so I bought a new Storm Lake 9mm barrel, and the groups are the same. I'm shooting off a rest, so I know it's not me. I've tried various factory ammo and several different reloads I run in competition, and the performance is poor with everything. Any ideas what could be causing such poor groups?

I don't know, I wouldn't expect a barrel to wear out that soon, although stranger things have happened.

The new Storm Lake barrel has maybe 150 rounds on it now and is just as bad, so I'm at a loss right now.

I would check the slide for wear. Pretty odd that a barrel would wear the bore out with only that many rounds...unless you are shooting super high pressure rounds. Was the storm lake barrel gunsmith fitted, or was it the normal size fits all drop-in that everybody buys off the street(???). If the barrel isnt fitted properly to the slide, and the slide is worn, good luck getting any accuracy.

I moved this thread over to Full Size Pistols, that forum gets tremendously more traffic and is more likely to find some answers to your problem.

Not sure if this helps much but I put a factory 1 - 10 twist barrel in my PRO 5". The barrel was fitted by the S&W Repair Center up here and the gun shoots like a laser. Better than I can shoot for sure. The barrel cost me $85. and I had to pay for shipping down to Victoria.

I shoot 124 gr lead TC bullets - Lyman 356402 bullets and Montans Gold 125 gr RN.

Take Care

Bob

I suspect it's the internal components that have worn. You're not going to shoot out a barrel in 10k rounds if it's cared for at all. If Bobs solution doesn't work for you check out an Apex barrel. You can fit it yourself or have a gunsmith do it for you.

Storm Lake and Wilson make barrels to factory specs and if the components have worn or are on the outer fringe of spec' they'll just repeat the error. Apex makes barrels with generous tolerances to allow them to be fit to the gun.

One other thing to check... the muzzle. Make sure there are no dings in it. That's why barrels are crowned; to protect the vital last portion of the rifling. Damage to that will degrade accuracy significantly.
