take down tool

So here is my problem, my MP40 that I bought in 2007 has had intermittent problems where the take down tool that holds the grip on would fall out while shooting. I had it sent back to smith so they could look at it and they could not duplicate the problem while they had it so it was sent back.

Now after having used this handgun for sometime the problem described has been becoming more of an issue where it is happening every time I go to the range and shoot it.

Anyone else have this problem, any solutions?

I'd stick something in the hole to tighten it up a bit. Another alternative would be just a little tiny drop of hot glue, a little bit very close to the edge, it will hold perfectly fine, but could be mechanically removed without too much trouble if you did need to remove the backstrap.

Are the nubs on the tool gone? If they are then that's probably the reason, and I'd call S&W and see if they will send you a new one. Also speed shooters specialties might have one.

Something seems worn out or out of spec to me.

I have an M&P9 made in 7/07 that was my IDPA gun for several years (shot a lot), and that tool's still a chore to get out.

They're still very tight in all my other M&P's too.

If a new takedown tool (TT) doesn't cure the problem, you can build up the composite shaft of the TT with black JB Weld, then sand/file it down to fit. It's the one product I've found that adheres well to the carbon fiber and composite materials used in firearms.

thanks for the replies, the tool still comes out very hard but the nubs are missing. in any regard I'm sending it to smith for the mag dropping out issue as well as that so we will see what the verdict is from them.
