M&P Magazine Follower Color?

I have an older M&P9 pistol that has magazines that have followers that are light gray in color. When using steel case ammo it is difficult to tell the ammo from the follower. I have considered dying the followers orange with RIT dye. Has anyone dyed M&P magazine followers? If so, what color, and was it beneficial. I have noticed that the followers on my M&P40 magazines are black in color. Maybe trying to dye the light gray followers black would be better than trying to dye them orange.

To make the issue more clear, when I am looking through the tiny holes in the magazine, it is sometimes difficult to tell how many rounds are in the magazine, such as setting up for a drill. The light gray color of the follower and the light gray color of the steel case ammo seem similar in color when viewed thru the tiny holes in the magazine. I am thinking that a color change of the plastic follower may help. I may try orange first, and if I don't like how that turns out, then just dye the followers black.

They are PLASTIC. DYE Wont penetrate them.
Plastic is colored at production hence what the color is through out it.
The numbered holes on the mag should help you determine rd count.

I have seen videos of people dying Magpul plastic parts. This may be a different type of plastic. if I am using brass case ammo, it is very clear to see how many rounds are in the magazine. The steel case ammo is light gray, and too close to the color of the light gray plastic follower.

How about pulling the slide back just a little and having a look?

I tried to dye the plastic black it did not work. I ended up using a permanent marker on the edges of the follower.

What I'm trying to do is make sure that a lot of magazines have a specific number of rounds for a drill. I need to know quickly how many rounds are in the magazines. I am hoping that the darker follower will allow me to see the steel case ammo more clearly.

How about using a wide Sharpie permanent ink pen in either blue or black?
Yep - Looks like our messages just crossed. Sorry.
