Installing a manual safety?

So Cabela's has their dual tone M&P9 (I guess I like the tan frames) but they don't come with the manual safety. I know it's possible to remove a thumb safety but what is involved in installing a thumb safety on a non-thumb safety model and does S&W sell those parts to individuals?

Well... you would have to change out the sear housing with one made for the thumb safety and you would have to cut the frame for the thumb safety. Probably more trouble than it's worth.. just my 2 cents

Well... not even close. If your frame has the cutouts for a manual safety THEN you can install a manual safety.

If your talented with a Dremel and a file cutting the frame is a piece of cake. Finding the safety lever should be easy since so many people take them off. Really all you have to do is find the sear housing with the safety detent, I believe they are about $30.00...

They aren't available for sale.

1. Buy a black M&P with the safety.
2. Buy the bi-tone no-safety M&P.
3. Swap slides.
4. Sell the non-safety frame with the black slide.

Not a CHEAP solution, but a solution. The Serial number goes with the frame, not the slide. The slides are identical, except for finish. You now have the "only" bi-tone safety gun.

Option 2:

1. Buy a safety-equipped gun.
2. Send it out to get the slide refinished for $100.

OOPS... I THOUGHT YOU WERE TALKING ABOUT THE BLACK/STAINLESS BI-TONE!

Well, I'm gonna bring this post back instead of making a new thread. I own a 9c and a 45m. My 9c came with a safety lever, and my 45m did not. I wanted to put a safety lever on my 45 for the added controlability while firing, and nobody sells the safety levers as stated before in this thread (other than a website selling them for $40). I took both of them apart recently, gave them full trigger jobs, and got a bit curious while looking at the two. So...my 45m did NOT come with a manual safety, but had the cutouts in the frame. The sear block did not have the spring and detent in it. I took the safety lever out of my 9c along with the spring and detent setup, swapped the frame plugs over to my 9c and threw the safety lever and spring/detent setup in the 45. Voila. The exact setup I wanted with both pistols. Just a bit of information for those searching the forums, as I attempted to, to find a fix for a similar situation. As long as your frame has the cutouts, the spring/detent/safety lever/frame plugs are interchangable between all the sizes of frames and calibers. (VTAC models excluded apparently) I was looking for a clearcut answer to this for most of the night. Safety lever conversion - yes.
