First, this "issue" does seem common on new Shields. Mine did it too at first, you can search the forum and find quite a few posts on this.
My guess is the mag spring is tight and when full exerts a lot of pressure on the bottom of the slide. Plus that last bit is when the striker has engaged the sear and that last bit of travel cocks the striker.
Between the pressure from the full mag, the striker return spring and what seems to be some fairly sharp ramp angles, it takes some oomph to get the slide to close at first.
Many things on the Shield will ease up with some rounds through it.

51, it sounds like your issue is more Shield specific and I cant really offer much assistance because I dont have personal experience, so I will bow out of the thread and hope your issues are resolved in short order and with satisfaction.
In closing, I would suggest.. put on a pair of garden or similar gloves (since the fish scale serations are mean!) and with the mag out, while watching a movie or something, just cycle the living hell out of it... multiple sessions, and see if that additional breaking in doesnt offer some relief.
