The 10XX guns are probably the strongest 10mm's on the planet. They aren't necessarily cheap, but they are readily available in a variety of configurations. I have a 1006 and a 1076. They are a hoot to shoot.

AS others have suggested for the same money you could get a EAA Witness Elite in 10mm a good proven 10mm gun, and for under $600 +/- a Glock is also a proven 10mm platform. The Glock is how I plan on going to a 10mm for my woods gun.

10mm is known for breaking guns that weren't meant to or properly designed to shoot it.

+1 on the EAA (Tanfoglio) Witness Elite in 10mm. I've got one and it is great fun to shoot. Too heavy for a carry gun but for a range toy, :-). A simple swap of a 40S&W barrel and lighter recoil spring and I've got both calibers. For icing on the cake, the 10mm mags work fine with 40S&W rounds even down to the 1.135" COAL that I use for my M&P40fs.

I have my sights set on a Sig P220 in 10mm, if I ever find one in the configuration I like.
That's the way to go.
