DIY brass bunch

This is for those like me who couldn't find any brass or aluminum punches available OTC and did not want to wait for a set of mail order ones. I recently installed a Apex Duty/Carry trigger up grade kit in my Shield, but didn't have any non damaging punches to use to remove/re-install the rear sight.

Through trial and error I found a suitable sized steel punch that fit perfectly tight in a piece of 6.5x55mm Swedish brass. I covered the base of the shell in blue removable painters tape and first tried it out on a iron sight on a very old and in poor shape .22 I was given for free. After I determined there was no damage to it's rear iron sight, I used it on my Shield's rear sight.

Worked superbly I am happy to report. So if you find yourself in a pinch and need a brass punch and cant or wont wait for a M/O purchase, you might consider my solution to the problem.

I am however ordering a set of brass gunsmith punches.

Where can I order a single, unloaded 6.5x55mm Swedish case?

J/K. I have several brass punches, and a several sight pushers.

Brass punches are a bit harder to find than steel punches, but they are out there.

I realize now I should have been a bit more descriptive, but all you need is to find a punch who's OD and ANY unloaded brass case that the mouth of which ID are close enough in size for a secure fit to work as a punch. I'm sure a piece of .270 Winchester brass would have worked as well as .264" piece of 6.5 Swede as an example.

Considering most steel punches have a taper to them finding a workable fit between the punch and the brass case should be rather easy. The purpose of this post was not to offer a suitable replacement to the proper for the job tool, but rather what can work if you find yourself in a situation where you need a brass punch, can't find on available OTC, and don't wish to wait for one in the mail.

Also KR, have you had any problems with frame damage from using a sight adjustment tool for sight removal? I am relatively new to HG iron sight removal and adjusting same by actually moving the entire sight in it's dove tail mounting on a HG, and have read more than a few posting retelling horror stories of damaging HG slides while trying to remove sights that are in extremely tight. But I always keep in mind I'm reading about a mistake made by what is basically a complete unknown who's skill set is also as equally unknown.

I often use a piece of threaded brass rod; ground to fit with just the right diameter and nose angle.

A bit of blue painter's tape affixed to either the punch or surface to be struck doesn't hurt, either.
