Probably had a grip on top of the side to remove it when he pulled the trigger.

I think saying that M & P are better because you don't have to pull the trigger is wrong. I'm a fan of Smith and Wesson but with this guy I bet he would have shot himself no matter what gun he had.

Most importantly, as with any firearm, the safety is between the ears. No matter what provisions were designed or how many "clicky things" were installed, if the operator of the weapon is untrained, uneducated and ignorant... ADs and NDs will continue to happen.

The OP doesn't mention the operators level of experience. This stuff happens to better trained, more experienced pistol shooters than I (and probably you too), due in part to the poorly concieved notion that "dropping the hammer" be included as a pivotal part of a pistol's takedown procedure.

Does not matter if it's a Glock, a M&P, a Colt or what ever!

Follow the 4 golden rules.

It can happen to an M&P, does not only happens to Glock.

Stay safe.

Damn. The take-down procedure of the glock doesn't require you to pull the slide back much at all so I can see why these things happen. It's nice that the M&P's slide must be locked back before lowering the take-down lever, effectively clearing the firearm and allowing easy visual inspection. Much safer design, but they're only as safe as the user,

I went to a call where a guy shot himself through the leg. He had an XD and was pointing it at his leg when he pulled the trigger. I can't understand why someone would point a gun in an unsafe direction !
The make of the gun is not important , what is important is that you or anyone should use SAFETY and CAUTION ! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD !

1) I dont do the disconnect thingy, I strike mine out just like a Glock for disassemble.

2) Just because an "operator" may have training and experience does *NOT* exempt them from being an *IDIOT*.

3) Even if they *DID* have training and experience, they *STILL* ADed there hand and thusly are in the idiot catagory.

4) Self inflicted GSW to the hand begs the question of the level of experience or training to be omitted. "Nuff said, the picture said it all".

5) People are stupid, and they breed. Thus its and endless cycle of self inflicted injury.. weather it be jack stands, chain saws or firearms... Pick your poison.
