UPDATE on mag drop problems

In conversation with a S&W rep today I was told that the metal engagement tab of the mag catch is much softer than the magazine metal and that when the tab wears against the mag during firing, that can lead to mag drop problems.

I enquired about the difference between catches marked "1" and "2" and was told that they are nnow hard anodizing the engagement tab on the catches so that they don't wear like the earlier versions did. He said that some of the catches marked 1 and some marked 2 were not as hard as they should have been. He said he personally obtained a new, fully hardened catch and would send it to me to try before exercising the option of sending the gun back to them a second time.

He asked me if I had switched the catch to the opposite side and if that helped. I said I had and it did. He thought the improvement was due to the opposite side of the catch's engagement surface being against the magazine rather than due to the tab being away from my thumb.

He said they don't think the magazine catch spring is weaker than it should be.

SO.... that's the latest I know. I'm awaiting the third mag catch to try out in my M&P 40 Compact.

Got my 40c back yesterday. MPL75XX Mag catch started dropping at 100 rounds. Put 250 rounds through it today, one mag drop. (153 round mark, suspected weak grip) no other failures thus far.

For those with no reported problems, it would be helpful to know how many rounds they have through their gun.

Justin... I'm sorry to hear that... even just one mag drop is a bad omen. Should not be happening, period!

How many rounds PPC? Just trying to figure out when folks are most likely to have a problem if they are going to have a problem. 'Like to be able to chart this.

I sent my 40 in after it started dropping mags, it was a early release before they got the prob fixed. And tonight i was at the range and my 40c started dropping the mag. I probably have over 1500 rounds as i go to the range about once or twice a month and drop 300-400 rounds a trip. But i know monday i will call and get the label shipped out and they will fix the prob And while it is there i will ask to get the ramp polished etc like i did with my fullsize and got it for free

Interesting that you had quite a few rounds through your 40c before it started giving you problems. That's why when folks say they haven't had a problem with their mag catch after 500, 600, 1000 rounds, etc. they still may not be home free. That's not reassuring. But as you said, S&W stands by their products and seems to take care of things. Still, you wish this wasn't happening. If our little poll indicates that 20 percent are experiencing mag catch problems (and the total sample I think at last count was only 100 respondents), I wonder what the percentage would be if all M&P owners were queried. Assuming the 2:10 ratio held, that's way too high. Suffice to say, this is anything but an isolated problem and it is not limited to the compacts. Like everyone at this site, I want S&W to score a home run with the M&P (it's a great feeling gun) but right now, it seems like we've got a bit of a rain delay. I think we'll get there but S&W, there's work to be done.

My 40 was flawless to 4000 rounds, then one day it started dropping on every shot. After return from S&W I got 1400 thru it no problems. The new mag catch feels tighter and is scratching mags all the way to hole where mag catch drops in. the first mag catch never did this.

I put about 750 through it before the mag started to unseat on a regular basis....
