Magazines won't drop free

I am having an issue with my M&P 40 FS not dropping the magazine completely when depressing the mag release button. It does release the magazine, but only drops about 1 inch and hangs, requiring me to manually pull the mag out of the mag well. This is what I've tested/observed:

I have 6 factory mags for this gun, a couple that are brand new, and all have the same issue. I also own a M&P 9 Pro and all the aforementioned mags work in it without fail.

It does not matter if the mags are fully loaded, completely empty, or in between… same result.

There appears to be some slight binding while inserting or removing the mags, as if the magazines were bulged, but again they all fit perfectly in my 9.

I have noticed that after pressing the mag release button, and the mag releases and drops about an inch, if I squeeze the grip (apply pressure to the front and rear backstrap) the mag will then fall completely free.

I have approximately 2500 rounds through this gun and this issue just started recently.

I have searched the forum and have not found anything conclusive to my situation. If anyone has any ideas concerning this matter, it would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'd contact S&W if you can't figure out a fix.

I've not had this problem, but the first idea that comes to mind is a very light coating of gun oil on the mag and see what happens. Hope this helps!

Thanks, I'll try that in the morning and see if it works.

If that doesn't work, try taking the mag release out and see if it may have gotten crud in it and reinstall, if you haven't already! Hope this helps!

It sounds like when you get the mags to drop free by squeezing the grip frame at front and rear; you're flexing the sides out a little.

I'd definitely contact S&W about that, as it sounds like the inner dimensions of the mag well are on the "tight" side (unless that frame has been exposed to some high heat).

A shooter or two on this planet has, at some time or another, gotten good results if the internal dimensions of the magwell on a polymer frame were too tight by wrapping their sticky-est magazine in sandpaper and running it in & out a few dozen times.

Pull the magazine catch out first to make sure it isn't hanging on that.

Pop out your magazine catch and clean it, the hole that is sits in within the frame, and the inside of the grip/mag well.

Thanks for the help. I've tried the following:

Removed mag release and cleaned.
Lightly oiled the mags.

Cleaning the mag release mechanism helped some. Now, only having issues with two magazines, the rest seem to work as designed. The gun has never been exposed to high heat. But, it is apparent that squeezing the grip (front to rear), is allowing the mags to drop free when mag release is engaged. Its a "plastic" gun but, I don't think thats right. I'm gonna give S&W a call and see what they say before doing any sanding.

I think that's a good move.
