Misfires and Jams

I've only had my used M&P9 for a month now, and have put over 500 rounds through it without issue. I cleaned my mags for the first time last week after a session at the range.

Today I had 3 rounds fail to fire and 2 jams. The second jam was my last round of the day. The round was so stuck that I needed assistance from the range to clear it. I was using WB Winchester 115 gr. ammo. It's what I shoot most often. I shot 54 rounds in all.

Did I do something to the mags when I cleaned them?(total disassembly and reassembly)

And to make it more confusing, I changed my grip today to try to correct a regular low and to the right issue. I reduced my grip a bit to see if it would affect my accuracy. It definitely improved a bit by doing so.

So, I'm not sure if it's the magazines, the gun, or possibly me loosening my grip a bit.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

When I clean the mags in my M&P .380 I always wonder if it's possible to put the mag spring in the wrong way. So far (700 > rounds of FMJ & HP) no problems but I'll be interested to watch this thread and see if someone can answer the mag spring Q.

I went back to the range today because it was driving me nuts. I watched a couple of videos on proper grip last night and checked out other posts on this forum. Turns out that I was way off in my thinking that less grip was the way to go.

I shot 70 rounds without a single FTF or malfunction. And my accuracy improved too. The issue yesterday was 100% me. Live and learn...(and apologies to my M&P9)

Glad to hear the gun is working properly and that you've identified the issue. Sometimes there are problems with the gun itself, but it is quite common with new shooters to have an occasional issue as they are learning...especially if they are learning on their own.

Thanks. Totally agree. I'm going to look into taking a few lessons. I've shot long guns all my life. But I just started shooting pistols in January. It's a totally different experience, and definitely a lot trickier than I thought.

Congrats!

As you just discovered; an auto pistol needs a firm grip to cycle against for reliable functioning.
