.40 to 9 Conversion for Compact

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forum. Just sold my Ruger SR9c for a M&P 40c last week. It came with several mags, as well as a 9mm barrel and mag. I haven't shot any 9 through it yet, but the former owner said he did with no issues.

I have been reading through the forum, and I was surprised to read that a standard S&W 9mm barrel won't work properly. I looked through the paperwork I was given, and there isn't an invoice or receipt for the barrel, so I can't confirm the make. I took several measurements between the barrels, and all the dimensions I measured were within 0.001"-0.002". But maybe I'm not measuring the right spots (newbie here).

Below are a few pics. Can you let me know how to confirm whether this is a standard or conversion barrel?

Thanks,
Jason

Welcome from Maine!

Maybe someone can identify the 2 'dots' vs the single 'dot' in that last picture.

If you read this thread, you'll see where the factory barrels differ.

conversion barrel or stock S&W barrel?

I'm not sure exactly what this means. Can someone help me out? Any chance you can draw me a pic on one of the above that I should be measuring?

Jason,
What you really need to be is concerned with your safety first.
Bottom line is it's not safe to use a 9mm barrel in a .40 S&W slide.
It's simply not worth risking getting injured over due to a negligent failure.
A conversion barrel (40 to 9) which you do not have will work.
By the way, you would need 9mm mags also.
Do an advanced search on this topic and you will find threads with supporting info., details and even photos with some barrel dimensions you are looking for.
See JeffWard's post in this thread: M&P 40 full size to 9mm conversion

Be smart and shoot safe!

By the way, I can tell you that on the 9mm barrel, either 1 or 2 dimples are markings for a more recently manufactured barrel with the newer twist rate (1:10) at least for the FS. I'm not sure what it means for the .40 barrel but it could be the same.

Thanks for the reply. The hood on the 9mm barrel I have is 0.026" narrower than the .40 barrel. Oh well. I guess I'll try to sell it. Is there a market for stock 9c barrels?
