Broken Frame Tool

One of my M&P .40's is easy enough to remove the frame tool to change a grip insert. The other one, the FDE .40, I could hardly turn it when I wanted to put in a small grip insert. I finally got it turned and it was in there tight. I started pulling hard on it, thinking it was just about to come out, and the tip of it broke off. The part that is right behind the magazine base plate.
So now I have the end of a metal rod sticking out about 1/8th inch or so, with a little jagged polymer around it. I have tried to grab the metal end with vise grips and channel lock pliers, but they keep slipping off, and i don't want to scratch up my frame.
I don't care about the medium grip insert that's on there now, I have extras.
I'm wondering if I can cut the grip insert away with a razor knife, and see the rest of the tool ( bare rod) inside and push it down ?
Any ideas anyone ?

The tool is retained by a tab On the other end of wire rod, up inside the magwell. Look up inside the rear surface of the mag well and see if the "tab" is still engaged in the small rectangular hole ..it probably still is. You will need to take a small pick a and rotate the tab 90 degrees either way THEN you will be able to pull down on the rod from the exterior and extract the part.

My first M&P ('07) definitely had a "lug" on the side of the lower plastic part that needed to be turned 1/4 turn to line up with a slot in the frame to be removed.

All the rest I own (made in 07/13 or newer) seem to be just a plain friction fit, and are harder to remove.

I'd clamp what's left in a vise and turn the frame while pulling up, myself. Then I'd ask S&W for a new one.

Yeah, call S&W. I bet they'll send you one for free.

There is a lug, or tab. It looks to be turned most of the way, but won't turn any more. It's like it's fused. From looking at my other FS with the grip insert off, I think I can Dremel away the grip insert, just being careful not to nick the frame, then push down on the top of the rod that is the center of the frame tool.
Yes, I'm sure S&W would send me a new tool, but they're only a few bucks, I ordered two more yesterday along with some other stuff I wanted, should be here in a couple days.
Like I said, my other FS .40 is snug, but no problem to remove compared to the FDE pistol.

You might consider heating the exposed end with a soldering iron and the pull the rod out from the retained polymer then deal with any small piece of plastic ...it may just fall out

I haven't got around to it as I don't want to rush things before I go to work or after I come home. I'll get it fixed Saturday as I'm off and can take my time. The new frame tools should be here Saturday as well. Sunday afternoon will be range time !

Thanks for all the suggestions. I thought about heating the rod with a soldering iron, but was worried if the plastic around the rod was hot enough to let the rod slip out, then I might get other plastic (the frame) hot where I didn't want it.
I used a little wheel on my Dremel, that looks like a miniature circular saw blade.
I cut across the grip insert's middle. I knew how deep I could go by looking at the other M&P with the grip insert removed.
Once almost through, I used a flat screwdriver to "persuade" the top half of the grip insert to separate, and lift away. Then I used the same wheel to cut what remained of the frame tool tab visible in the mag well "window". The mutilated frame tool then came out after pushing down at the end of the tool's rod end.
Even without the tab, the remains of the frame tool were very tight in the frame.
When I get the new frame tool tomorrow, I'll give it a test fit without the grip insert on. If it's as tight as the old one, I want to make sure I can get it out.
Some fitting might be necessary.
I doubt I'll ever take it out now that I have my preferred size of grip insert on, but you never know. I don't want to have it break off out in the field if I did need it. At the same time, I don't want it to be so loose as to fall out.
