Saturday Night Steel Shooting

Wife and I have our first Steel Challenge this weekend and we've been looking for someplace to practice with steel. We've been fortunate and have found two great places.

The first is a Cowboy Shooting setup some 25 miles north. The stages include a 22lr-specific steel area with falling plates at various distances and other targets. In addition you can shoot any of the stages with a 22lr; the stage targets can be moved to more of a steel challenge configuratoin. Unless there is a Cowboy Shooting practice you can just show up, pay a "range fee" and have at it; if 3 or more folks (very unlikely) one needs to be an RO. While we can't shoot our 9mm and 40cal, using our M&P22s we still get worthwhile practice.

We also found a group that shoots steel every Saturday night at a rifle range. The range isn't open for rifle, but the Saturday night group sets up at the far end of the range including a very good variety of targets. We were supervised by one of the ROs as is their practice for at least your first time. My wife did great her first time using a holster; the RO didn't want here re-holstering after "load and make ready", but more home practice and a few more range sessions she should be good to go. Small steel targets, 8" or less, at 25 yards are a great test for senior citizens using iron sights! This range is some distance from our home, but we'll definitely get up there every 3-4 weeks: friendly folks, non-competitive atmosphere, lots of shooting - what can go wrong?

The Saturday night steel shooting is at the San Leandro range. The range website includes a link to the activity. The Coyote Valley Range (Morgan Hill) includes a cowboy shooting venue; other than that one area this range is exclusively for shotguns.
