Is there a specific bullet you are looking at? Most 40 shooters load a TC (truncated cone), which I have seen described as a semi wadcutter, but its different from the traditional SWC like on the 38/357, 44 or 45.

This is an Xtreme Bullet which they call a flat point, but could be called a TC.

40sw 155gr SWC

Missouri 155 grain coated swc works great in my M&Ps ( 5" pro, full size, compact and Shield). 3.5 grains of Titegroup results in a soft-shooting, totally reliable load for IDPA.

dave Whats your OAL. Or do you set the shoulder 30ths above the brass and it is what it is .

OAL is 1.145 which produces a shoulder of approximately .060 above the case.. Could probably seat a little deeper but the 1.145 really works great.

Throats in my .40s are longer than my .45s, so the COL is comparatively longer.
I load the Penn and the old NBC 155gn L-SWCs at 1.210". I could load a bit longer, but that COL works well.
Your barrel may have different needs, so you'll have to determine what works in your gun.
Like all lead SWCs, the COL is determined by the shoulder hitting the lede/rifling, so the ogive/meplat can cause large variations in COL from different SWCs, but the distance from the case mouth to shoulder is the same for all.
If you get a seating stem the seats on the shoulder, you never have to change the stem setting for any SWC.

Thanks for the info. Found out my old rn 155gr load I ran so well in my kahr tp40 would not chamber reliably in my m&p so loaded the last 400 to a longer 1.44 oal ,the shoulder sets .070 above the rim and shoot well. Just have to stop now and get an order together for several cartidges .

noylj What powder and charge are you running ?

In my guns, best accuracy with 155gn L-SWCs is with AA5 and Silhouette:
AA5: 6.3-6.5gn and 6.8-7.5gn, with most of my loads being 7.4 +/- 0.1gn.
Silhouette: anywhere from 5.5-7.5gn, with 6.0-6.5gn being about the best.
Accuracy goal: <2" at 25 yards
