I would like a recommendation for a revolver to take to the range.
And to use as a carry gun.

Take a look at the Ruger LCR. I often use it as a back up gun or when I'm going to be in shorts and a t-shirt.

Carry guns and range guns IMHO are two different animals. I wanted the same thing and was really close to buying a Ruger SP101 3 inch. Probably would have made a decent carry gun but the fixed sights made it a difficult range gun. I just couldn't get used to the rear sight, or lack there of. It was a nice gun and I will probably end up with a 4 inch version later. Ended up with a Glock 26 for carry. As you might be able to tell I am not stuck on one gun maker as I have a S&W M&P9, Ruger Blackhawk and a RIA 1911.

Snubbies (particularly when shot DAO; the way they'd most likely be shot in a "social encounter") require some dedication to master.
That said, when you can shoot your snubbing accurately; you can shoot most anything, and your autos will all feel like they've had custom trigger jobs.
I worked with mine a bit last summer, and was shooting steel at thirty yards with, them by the end of the morning.
They're quite accurate when your to do your part, and will definitely make you a better shooter.
