M&P-15 MOE Mid.

Seriously considering the M&P-15 MOE Mid length (gas tube), what do you all think about the M&P15. I know that chrome lined bores have been popular for quite a while, the M-16 I had while in the service (1980's) even had one but how much of an advantage is that? Seems like a well built firearm to me. Which ammo works best with the 1 in 8 twist?

1/8 barrel is a good middle of the road and will handle both lighter and heavier bullets well. You definitely want a chrome barrel if you can get it in your price range. They just plain last longer and are much easier to clean. Would have commented sooner but just didn't see the post.

Sounds like Smith is using a melanite finish in place of the chrome. I heard of this after my initial post both at a recent gun show and on you tube. Some are saying that it is as good or nearly as good as the chrome lining. Anyone have insight on this?

I have rifles with both the chrome and melonite coating and have not noticed any difficulty in cleaning the later. Although if you are a high volume shooter you may get a longer life out of a chrome lined barrel.

Thats what I had always heard but recently, I've heard some state that melanite is as durable or almost as durable as chrome...What kind of round count could one expect from a barrel? Chrome and Melanite?

Either way the barrel will out last you unless you shoot tens of thousands of rounds annually.
