When I field striped my Shield 9 I noticed the barrel is heavy walled like my Storm Lake 9mm conversion barrel for my full size M&P 40. I took the barrel out of my 40 and the muzzle would slip into the the slide on the Shield. I also looked at the ejection port on the slide on both guns and it appears to be the same size. What are the chances Smith made the slide the same for both the 9mm and the 40 cal. I am wondering if a "stock" 40 cal. barrel will fit in the slide for the 9mm Shield

While the barrel may fit in the front hole of the slide, the rear part of the slide where it faces the barrel and base of the cartridge (breech face) are not the same size. The breech face area of a 9mm is smaller than the .40. Permanent modification, by a very competent pistolsmith, to a 9mm breech face (i.e. enlarging) needs to be done to fit a .40 barrel and cartridge.

In short, they're not interchangeable.

Thanks for the reply didn't think it would be that simple. So how does it work on my full size 40 when I use the conversion barrel and the "stock" slide

Your .40 slide breech face is bigger than the 9mm, i.e. 0.40" is bigger than 0.356", the 9mm round will flop around, it still won't work. You can't super glue metal on your breech face

You will need a new slide and new barrel, is what I'm trying to hint.

That's good news!

I bet that someone will try it with a Storm Lake .40 barrel when the .40 caliber SHIELDs

appear.

That would be sweet as pie if it works, as a SL or other .357 SIG barrel would fit as well.

despite emails and letters from myself and others, Smith will probably be stubborn and not

offer the Shield in .357, or .357 SIGs for non LEOS.

The conversion barrels might be a way around this

Yeah,if you had the 40 you could go to 9, but not the other way around.

I bought a Shield 40 anticipating a conversion barrel. I have a 40c and a 9mm conversion barrel. Love the combination. Cant wait for the same flexibility in the superior slim Shield.

I also purchased the .40 shield anticipating a 9mm conversion barrel in the future.
Earlier this week I purchased a used M&P .40 FS, knowing that I can currently get a 9mm conversion barrel.
My long term plan is to have all my pistols in .40 with 9mm conversion barrels.

Now to decide what to do with my XD 9mm 4" Service.
