Review: M&P Shield vs. Springfield XDs 45 Photo Comparison

After our recent photo review of the S&W M&P Shield vs. Compact 9c, MandPNews.com was flooded with requests to compare the Shield with Springfield Armoryís new XDs sub-compact .45 ACP, so naturally we did. One thing I noticed right off the bat was*the XDs was very nose heavy, even when loaded to capacity with its 5-rounds of 45. Thatís right, with the supplied compact magazine, the XDs carries 5-rounds compared to the Shields 7 rounds. The XDs is also heavier by over 2 ounces and in this authors opinion, is a tiny gun for such a big caliber. Donít get me wrong, I love the XDs, but I prefer the Shield for defensive carry. These photographs were taken with both the extended and regular magazines. Enjoy!

M&P shield Overall Length 6.1"
Springfield XDS Overall Length 6.3"

M&P Shield Overall Height: 4.6"
Springfield XDS Overall Height 4.4"

Springfield XDS Frame Width: 1"

M&P Shield Weight: 19.0 oz
Springfield XDS Weight: 21.5 oz.

Does the shield come in a 45?
I know on fs MP 9mm and 40 are on same frame etc. but the 45 is on a different "larger" set up. I only say this Becasue the pics compare a XDs .45 to a shield 9mm.
Would a .45 shield be slightly larger/heavier?

Just asking, because I have no idea! :-)

Won't pass without a magazine disconnect.

I did do some photos of XDs with the 7rd mag. Believe it or not it is still very nose heavy loaded with 8 rounds of 230gr HP.

I own both of them. Both are GREAT guns.... In fact, I use the same IWB holster for both. But a more precise comparison should be done with both the Shield and XD-S when Springfield releases the XD-S 9MM "supposedly" in May/June timeframe.

I own them both as well. They are both awesome...however I could shoot my Shield all day long....that .45...with heavily serrated grip...not so much. Have a question guys. I bought a couple Pearce Grips for my XDs (pinky rests)....does anyone know if someone makes them for the standard sized Shield magazines? Pearce doesn't.

Good perspective, this could be important for those shooters who plan on becoming proficient with their carry weapon.

While Pearce makes them for quite a few firearms, there's not one for the Shield... yet. While it might not be very helpful for some folks, there may a way to modify the Pearce extension for a Taurus 709 Slim, it's explained more in these 2 videos:
