Shield IWB for heavy set guys

I recently got my CHL(Friday) and I'm also a new owner a 9mm Shield. I've searched on here for various holsters. I'm a heavy set guy and have a spare tire to deal with. I've been thinking about the N82 Professional holster, since I did find a youtube video of a guy that used it and he was heavy set, maybe even a little bigger then me.

Any of you heavy set guys like me have any recommendations on a IWB holster for the Shield?

Thanks in advance.

In my fluffy days I found that a very low riding holster with plenty of cant (angle) riding at 4 o'clock worked best for me. The low ride and position put it below and just behind the love handles and a 15+ degree cant places the grip closer to vertical - reducing the chance of printing.

I've had good luck with a Custom Carry Concepts Quick Cover. I've also had good luck with a TT-Gunleather "Mike's Special". Both are low riding holsters made to order by busy holster makers so be prepared to wait 6-8 weeks for it to ship. My Shield and its LG-489 laser ride in a made to fit Quick Cover, and I currently have my 3rd TT-Gunleather holster being made, this time a Slim XC for an M&P45c.

If you want to try an OWB take a look at Black Dog Concealment. His stuff ships pretty fast and it sucks in tight to the body when used with a good gunbelt. Do NOT skimp on the quality of your gunbelt, and follow the sizing instructions carefully! Any holster relies on the stiffness of the belt for support.

After many tries I settled on Wright Leather Works Cruiser(clip) and also went with a cross-draw which is the most comfortable for me as well as a more natural draw movement. Concealed Carry Leather IWB Holsters | Wright Leather Works LLC They've got many others to choose from and the holsters are custom molded specifically for your weapon of choice.

I recommend the Brommeland Gunleather Max Con-V for IWB carry.

They are custom made holsters that aren't cheap, and usually take 12-16 weeks for delivery; but are likely the last holster you'll ever have to buy.

I started using them over 11 years ago, and that first one is still in use.

I have them in three different sizes for my 1911's; and just ordered two more today for my M&P9, and my 9c.

Extremely comfortable, and superior fit, finish and quality.

Here's a pic of my Commander sized one:

If you want to carry owb and don't want to wait for a custom holster, check out the Galco Stinger. Galco for S&W Shield

You can get it on Amazon or Ebay for about $50. It covers up well with just a untucked button down or t-shirt.

If you want to try iwb, and don't mind a hybrid holster or waiting about a month, check out these guys; White Hat Holsters... gun gear for the GOOD guys!

Hope this helps! :)

Also on the heavier side, and currently using a Galco KingTuk, which is as one would suspect an IWB tuckable configuration, similar to the Crossbreed, CompTac, AlienGear, etc. Works decently well enough, but I just purchased an N82 Pro IWB to try also. Haven't received it yet, but seems to be a little less profile, one clip instead of two, bit nice body shield, etc. I'll report back when I've had a change to wear it for a few days...

I'm also not sold on the twist to pull motion, but going to wear it for a bit and see how things go. Honestly, I find "tuckable" to be a bit of a misnomer - with both the single and double clip styles. Technically speaking, you can tuck around it, but it's a bit of a monkey ***** a football process for me - doesn't really tuck in very much, hard to straiten up and keep strait, shirt pulls out easy, at least for me. Could by body shape, though - flat bellies may have no issues. ;).

If any of you decide to sell your N82 Professional tactical holster let me know.

I bought the Foxx hybrid holster to try out. I haven't wore it yet but have tried it on at home and it's not bad so far. Let's see how it feels after a full day of wearing it.

Thanks, my buddy had dibs - as soon as he saw it, he said - I want that if you don't lol.

Sticking with the King Tuk for now - gun rides a little lower than the N82, plus less backing - I though the extra backing/fabric would be more comfortable, but in actuality - for me with some extra padding naturally  it wasn't. Flat bellies or appendix carry, I can see the N82 working well, in fact that's what my buddy is going to use it for - appendix carry. He uses a Hidden Holster tuckable design (basically the same style as the King Tuk, CrossBreed, etc) for strong side carry.

Certainly not meant to offend anyone, but after being out of shooting for a while and now back into it, I'm really taken back by how many fellow shooters are in terrible physical condition, even young guys in their 20s and 30s. Kinda clownish to see some of these guys in tactical dress and gear when it's pretty obvious they couldn't run a quarter mile if their life depended on it.

But, hey guys, if you're grossly overweight, it's up to you. You can get into shape and improve the prospects for a long and healthy life, or you look forward to probably diabetes, heart disease, bad knees and joints, etc.

Improving your physical condition can be done. It's discipline. Hopefully we see the shooting sports as requiring discipline, coordination, physical agility, and determination to improve. I did it. Lost 30 lbs and you can't believe how much better I feel. If you're 50 lbs overweight, think of it as carrying around a 50 lb pack on your back 24 hours a day. What do you think that's going to do to your joints in the long run? Your heart?

Go ahead and pan me if you want, but look in a full length mirror tonight and be honest with yourself if you're proud of what you see.

Your REAL friends will be honest and want to help you.

A little more tactful, and "tactical" response would have been "I like this holster, or what about this holster. .....followed by, I found it easier, more comfortable to carry, the more trim/in shape I became"

Something along those lines would've probably gone a little smoother. ......just saying

Ok. How about a shoulder holster or a holster shirt/holster patch instead of a IWB holster? IWB holsters usually requires an actual waistline if you want to be able to access your firearm quickly and safely.

I use a Remora tuckable IWB, which I think is excellent, except for re-holstering, which is a very minor issue. I have a Black Dog kydex which I like OWB on the range/hunting, etc. It can be used IWB, but not that comfortable against the hip bone. If you're more padded there, it might be ok. YMMV.

you know-- I am 77 , almost 78 --weigh in at 205 down from 229 6 months ago. Been workin on the high chlorestoral/overweight/high blood pressure thing, and I can tell you first hand it is tough. One thing about it is I dam sure don't want some forum member telling me I need to lose weight. Only two people I know have that privilege--my wife and my doctor.

Good work Jared. Keep it up. As I'm sure you have found, once you change your habits, it's easier. As we get older it gets harder, which is good reason to get one's self under control when you're young. The scary thing to me is seeing the young men that stand to have serious medical problems before they're 50 or even 40.

As shooters, like it or not, we represent the community as a whole and I think we have some responsibility to set a good example and image to the public, and even more so to our children and families.

With the coming Obama-care, where personal responsibility for one's health doesn't matter economically to the individual, we're going to see an unbelievable amount of taxpayer money spent due to the affects of obesity.

And "new2shoot" is right, I don't come from the Obama school of tell 'em what they want to hear and that nothing is ever their fault. I come from a military background that valued honest and plain talk. Not sure that's true anymore with political correctness the policy of the day.

As for the few vitriolic comments so far, and with apologies to the Bard . . . "Methinks they doth protest to much."
