I was a cop for 27 years and recently retired. This is what I do: pull over, roll front windows down, turn car off, at night turn the dome light on, keep hands at 10:00 and 2:00 on the wheel. When the officer approached I say the following: "I am a retired LEO and I am armed. How do you wish me to proceed".

Then follow his/her directions. In the event I am carrying with a CCW, I say I have a CCW and am armed. How do you wish me to proceed?

Best and safest way to do it. And NO sudden moves will keep you from getting shot as well. Hats off to you sir, thank you for your service to a VERY hard job to do.
Enjoy that retirement, you very well deserve it...!

Thank you for the kind words.

It is also important to remember that if I am stopped, I am the one who is at fault-even if I don't think so. It is still the LEO's scene and I am to follow that officers direction.

He/she and I can swap stories once the stop has concluded. I found that this approach works very well for me (regardless of which side or the stop I was on).

Just my thoughts.

No matter what you believe on how laws should be and what's legal or required, I personally think it's common courtesy and common sense. I just think that by just letting the LEO know you're being a nice safe guy and that makes everybody's life safe and easier. It's not about what's legal or not, it's about what's ethical.
I'm not a cop but if I would be I'm sure I'd like to know, once again for safety reasons.

I got stopped last Wednesday. I was in the wrong (coasted through a "pink" traffic light). That's when I saw the LEO. I said to my passenger "We are going to meet one of Ludingtons finest!" Sure enough, lights, I pull over in a safe place. He asks for license, reg etc. I tell him that I am a CPL holder, however I am not carrying. His response was "Thanks, I do appreciate that." He did the normal check. He didn't give me a ticket (he had every right to IMO) and was very relaxed and friendly.
I would rather let them know up front and avoid any misunderstandings!

You not getting a ticket was likely "his thank you" for "your respect" for him/her.
I know if i were a LEO, you give respect, you get respect. Common sense goes a long way.

That's the vibe I got from him PaPow. My Father is a retired Sherrifs Deputy, and most of my friends Parents were LEO too. We learned at a young age to respect all of our Men and Women in uniform.

Look at my avatar pic, whats written goes a long ways for sure.
Not whats being described here, but i think you get what it means.

If you look for trouble with law enforcement, you`ll surely find it.

Keep in mind that Nevada does not honor Calif. CCWs, but they do have open carry there.
