New Shield PC 9mm accuracy and barrel wear issues.

I own two other M&Ps, both in .40 S&W. A Compact and a fullsize. Love them! Shot an incredible 1.5" group at 40yds last Fall with my compact. Wanted something even smaller for shorts pocket carry and purchased the Performance Center 9mm Shield. Took it to the range today and loved the trigger, sights, recoil, and 7yd accuracy was acceptable at 1 1/8" for 5-shots.

However, tried 25yd rested group and it was all over the place and returned 6" barely. Worst I've ever shot with a pistol in my life. Tried different ammo and same results.

Also noticed the gun just didn't feel right when cycling the action; gritty and the top of the barrel seemed to drag.

This was fresh out of the box with nothing more than a wipedown.

Field stripped the pistol and noticed an odd wear pattern on top of the barrel near the front. Field stripped my M&P compact and no such pattern on it.

Is this normal for the Shields? I hate to think that I have to send back my brand new pistol...

Took better pics of the barrel and it is definitely toast. Will be contacting S&W and sending the pistol in for repairs... Crap.

Had to send my first full-size M&P back in for some feeding issues when I first got it and customer service was excellent.

Just checked mine and although I have not shot it a bunch, I show no wear at all.

I just checked my PC Shield9 barrel, and it has next to no wear after several hundred rounds through it.

I'm sure S&W is going to want to see the pistol to check everything out.

Sorry about your trouble, but their CS is top notch.

Called S&W Customer Service and the girl tried to argue with me that it's normal because the Shield is not designed for "long range" accuracy.

Got a dude on the phone and he agreed to have a look at it. Shipped it off today.

I agree with the girl.

S&W accuracy statement for under 3 inch barrels is as follows ( this is from M&P Safety and instruction Manual for the M&P Pistols).

7 yards 1.7 Inches

14 yards 3.9 inches

21 yards 6.3 Inches

I have never seen a statement on the accuracy on 3 inch and longer barrels.

My personal Shield does 3 inches at 15 and I am quite happy considering the 5.25 inch sight radius.

I expect S&W will replace the barrel for you anyway.

If I shoot someone from 40 yards , it is going to have to be with a rifle.

Did you not read the thread or look at the pictures???

How can you think that barrel is not defective?

Exactly!

And as a point of reference; I shoot my Shields, a little Kahr CM9, and a couple of snubbies pretty well at 25 yards. I shoot my 1911's, M&P9's and 9c a bit further.

The inherent accuracy of the smaller handguns is better than many realize.

had a somewhat similar issue with mine, it kept getting hung up and the slide was locking open. I think yours would've ended up with something like this down the road.

brought it to my gunsmith and he smoothed it out and rounded the lip of the slide just a tad. looks like this now and functions perfectly.

I emailed pics to S&W and they wouldn't send me a new barrel, they wanted the gun. It hasn't gotten any worse since my gunsmith worked on it so I've help on to it.
I've got a little over 1000 rounds through it now....so far so good, if I see a groove redevelop I'll send it back in.
