Angry New shield 9mm

Just brought it home, thought I would field strip it to acquaint myself.
Cannot pull slide back as hard as I try. never had this experience before.
Should I go back to the store or is it fixable here at home?

Welcome to our little corner of the net.

Chances are you are experiencing the same problem that I have, which is poor hand strength, in my case due to aging hands. The small pistols are notorious for strong springs, the small slides are hard to grip, so all of this kind of adds up. When I was looking at small pistols I couldn't even begin to pull back the slide on the 40 cal pistols.

One thing that makes it easier is to use one hand to hold the slide firmly, and then PUSH the frame forward, instead of trying to pull the slide back, this helps a lot of people. I haven't looked recently, but a number of companies were making what they call slide rackers, which help the many owners of these little pistols to retract the slides. You might want to Google for a Shield slide racker and see what pops up. I'm sure you will get a lot of suggestions. Click on one of those videos, there's lots more like this listed.

Pull the gun apart and clean & lube it thoroughly.
These M&P smith shields are VERY stiff when new.
It`ll take quite a few 100 rounds for it to loosen up.

Welcome.

I thought I had problems with mine too but that is one tight azz spring on these things. I also have low hand strength and the first few times I stripped mine I had issues until I used the method in the first video.

SLIDE PROBLEM ISSUE

I had the same problem and found that the yellow sear disconnet lever had jammed in the sear ,once I got it free I was able to lower it and never had the slide issue again.
