Oil only for me and ONLY on the spots S&W says to oil it.
Fours years with 2 shields (40 for 3 plus now the 45) and no issues with either.

I had been a hoppe's for cleaning and remoil guy for years. However the wife has always hated the smell of hoppe's, so recently I switched to Ballistol. seems to do a great job at cleaning and nothing in it is toxic. jury is still out on lubing though, as it seems my .22 pistol wants a little "real" oil. my 9mm's are all doing fine on ballistol by itself. And best of all, happy wife / happy life, the little woman isn't bitching about the smell.

Have you tried the HOPPE`s ELITE series...??? They work way better than the original formula, and no odor.

You could switch the bottles, then tell your wife she`s gone crazy after all these years....heheheheheee

I agree to lube it where S&W says to. I think your question is "What oils and lubes do you use for your most prized possession?" I have the following products that I can use any time I clean my guns but NOT all at one time:

Alcohol
Sharp Shoot R Precision's Accelerator & Wipe Out (for the bore)
Ballistol
CLP
Hoppes
Tetra
3-In-1
KG-10 (Molly)
XF-7 (Molly)
Lubriplate No. 105 Grease
Muscle Grease

Each has a purpose for the different guns I have.

I have little ones around so have to use non-toxic CLPs so it's been pretty much Slip2000, Ballistol, or Froglube with Aeroshell 6 grease where needed. It's worked for me thus far.

As for me I usually use CLP, sometimes Mobil 1, but almost any lube will work fine.

I like Ballistol, but Mrs doesn't like the aroma, so I'm back at RemOil. It's worked for me as long as I've been shooting.

Awe hell, I can't resist... I switched to Weapon Shield a few years ago from good ole Hoppe's 9 and have never regretted it. The PC Shield has never seen anything but Weapon Shield. It makes cleaning it a breeze, especially with the ported barrel on the PC version.

Check out his YouTube videos and draw your own conclusions...

I buy it on Amazon (out of stock when I posted this but it comes and goes)
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IPQXC74

That kit is almost 2 years old and I have at least 2/3 of all of it left or more. I use the grease up around the port areas and the outside of the chamber. About 2000 rounds on the PC Shield now with NO issues, even shooting in 20F to 30F degree weather. A little goes a LONG way! The solvent is great for cleaning too!

I use vaseline inside the slide up in the PC shield ported area when i shoot it alot in one outting of target practice.
Just a light film... all the powder residue wipes right out of the slide when i`m done target shooting.
I learned that trick back in the days of drag racing... the vaseline kept the hot rubber from baking onto the rear quarter panel.

Forgot to mention that I had my Shield9 nickel/boron nitride coated so it's pretty slick and requires very little lube. Having said that I've been using Froglube (wiped dry) for the past three years on several firearms with success. I've also used Ballistol with good success.

CLP and Hoppes #9. most gun oils are Kerosene + 2 synthetic stroke oil. read the ingredients.
Also i use most of my 2 stroke oil and little STP for bullet casting.

Do you ever oil the barrels? Or do you only use bore cleaner on that?

Another dumb question, but what is the true difference between bore cleaner and lubricating oil? Could you just use bore cleaner on the whole gun? Or do you definitely want to use both?

Use Ballistol on everything and I've never had an issue.

Hoppes #9 for the bore, CLP to clean powder residue off slide and frame. RemOil to lube the slide. I used a highly touted grease on the slide of my XD45 and it immediately short stroked, went back to a drop of oil and 1500 rounds with no FTFs.

Where does S&W say to lube it? I'd like to know.
