I had a huge problem getting the final round in both of my original 40 magazines. The spring was soooo strong, I couldn't get it to load. I took the gun back to the retailer and he tried (a much bigger, younger guy than I) and he had the same problem. He advised to contact customer service. I did and they said it was designed that way to feed reliably??? They told me to force load them and leave them sit in the magazine a couple days and it would get easier. I did that and now loading the magazines is much easier. Problem solved.

Has any one tried Wolff mag springs ? I have used them in a few other guns with good luck, but the Shield spring is different.

PaPow, I was going to ask you about the mag springs anyway. Was it the Wolff Shield mag springs you tried? Are both the 7 & 8 round springs the same. You don't have to order 2 different ones?

I am 86 & like all old people I have weak wrists & fingers, but I still like to shoot. I bought one of the first Shields to come out & I hated it. Racking the slide was impossible, & I wasn't the only one having trouble. I got rid of it quick, but when I saw & tried the ported Shield I traded my CCP on it. I could rack it to load it fine but to lock the slide back to put t together was real hard. I bought a Handi- Racker & that fixed it. They are great.

I put a TLR6 light on it & it is great. I put 42 out of 50 in the bull & the other 8 in the 9, on my first time shooting. It was only at 25', but that is fine with me. As my dealer friend used to ask me , was that at 5' ?

Hi Gene,
at the time i bought my wolff mag springs, there was only one type/style spring available. Haven`t bought any since... but i haven`t been back to their website either, so they might have something more updated..???... i dont know. The ones i bought work real good, in fact, better than the factory springs in my own honest opinion. The wolff springs seem smoother & quieter than the factory mag springs. The factory springs seem to squeak and squawk.

I do switch my mag springs out alot so as to keep the tension fresh. I`ve always taken my empty mags that i`m not using, pull them apart, and let the springs rest so to speak. Seems to have worked for over 40yrs+ for me because i`ve never had any "loaded mag issues" due to weakening springs.

To help with your slide racking.... i use "Liquid Wrench-RV Dry Lube" on the recoil spring assembly. I buy it at walmart (in the automotive section) for $4 a can. Why pay 3 times the money for gun name branded dry lube when the LW-RV DryLube is the same exact stuff for $4 a can vs $14 a can. Take your recoil assembly out, hold it over the garbage can, clean it with brake-clean, then literally drench it with the RV dry lube, lay it on a paper towel to dry, then re-install it in your gun. Couple drops of good oil on the rails, and that slide will roll like its on ball bearings. And also, the RV-dry lube works super great inside your mags too...!!! Pull those apart, clean them, spray them real good with dry lube. Make sure you clean and spray the follower too.

Ohhhhhhhhh man, i have the TLR6 on ALL my shields too, even on my PC ported shields... I LOVE IT...!!!! Best thing since sliced bread...!!!!
I shoot ALOT... 500rds in a weekend easily, and those TLR6 stay planted. Since sighting it in, none never had to be adjusted again.

As for the 42 out of 50@25`... ain`t NO WAY i`m gittin in a gun fight with youuuuuu mister....lol.... THATS AWESOME SHOOTIN...!!!!!
I`m in my 60`s, i can hold my own at bullesyes as well... but i agree with you, these little guns can be hard to rack. Where did you get your handy racker at (?)

Hi PaPow, Thanks for the great answers to my mag questions. I will do that right away. I wrote a long answer & lost it. I am not a computer wizard. I got the Handi Racker at my gun range , On Target in Asheville NC. I saw on the Gun Show 2017 on a Utube that Handi Racker has 2 new ones at about $18 ( higher list) that will do about all guns. Look it up, but look on ebay because most stuff is cheaper there.

I do like a light better than anything else, a laser or night sights, but the TLR6 has both. I do really like Big Dot sights for old eyes. My eyes are about the only original part I have & they are good still.

PaPow, I read up on the handi Racker & the 2 new ones each have 2 sides to each racker & will do most all, 95% , of all guns. They are called Handi Racker 2 & I got the bigger one that will do all from an XDs9 to the real big guns. I paid 24.95 shipped on ebay for it. The green one is the small one PPK's &probably a Shield, but I imagine the bigger one shoul do the Shield too. The orange one does all the bigger guns.

The first one I got was the old one & it took 5 different ones to do what 2 will do now. It fit the Shield & PPK & Bersa 380 & others.

PaPow, I did the recoil spring just like you said & it did help. I have gone from not being able to lock the slide back to 10 time in a row. I picked the brake cleaner & dry lube up at Wallmart today. I have been using Frog Lube for a long time & really like it. I used it on the slide.

I had a big Civil War collection back in the 1950's & 60's . I had both revolvers & carbines. All were Marshaly marked & cost between $90 & $125 . A WW2 German PPK was $35 to $45. That was a lot of fun.

By the way how do you post pictures here? I can do it most places but not here yet.

Hi Gene,
i`m not sure how to post pictures, i`ve never tried it in here.

Glad the LW RV Dry lube helped...! I know it works awesome for me. I keep a case of it on hand for everything.
I also use it to lube my case`s just before resizing them to reload. (same stuff as hornady dry lube, but far cheaper)
Be cautious with CRC brake-kleen... it CAN discolor your polymer frame.

Here`s what i clean all my guns with... it does NOT hurt plastic... best thing since sliced bread.
(you can get it at walmart too, beats paying $15 bucks a can for gun cleaner)
https://www.walmart.com/ip/CRC-Elect...1-Oz./16817418

Be careful with the frog lube, it does gel up when cold. I stopped buying it.
I just use CLP by Break-Free when i`m out of my homemade lube.

CLP Break-Free (walmart)

Take care my friend, be safe

After my second range session I took the 7 round mag apart and cleaned it. When I reloaded it, it would only take 5 rounds and felt "funny" while reloading. I took it apart again and the spring was severely bent at the small coil/big coil junction. I did some research on the web and there were several other Shield owners who encountered the exact same problem. S&W told them it was a batch of bad spring and sent them a new spring.

I also contacted S&W customer service regarding my mag spring and they also told me it was a batch of bad springs. They are sending me a new spring. As the Shield is my carry gun, I am seriously concerned and am wondering if there truly was a bad batch of springs or if this is a potential design defect of these mag springs. Thoughts?

Also, has anyone tried the Magguts generation 2 spring? This is the spring that is Z shaped as opposed to coiled. I have attached a picture. Results?

Thanks in advance,

Frank

UPDATE 1-21-17:

So S&W sent me 2 new mag springs and I received them today. They are the same coil shape as the defective springs, but they are a little different in color. They are more grayish, while the defective springs were more copperish in color. I put them in my 7 and 8 round mags and loaded/unloaded them several times at home. No problems. I then took them to the range and put 50 rounds of my carry ammo and 50 rounds of target ammo through them. Again, no problems. Looks like S&W was correct about a bad batch of mag springs, and kudos to their customer service for getting my the replacement springs so quickly.

Regards,

Frank A.

Frank,

Ive been using the magguts +1 on 7 & 8 round mags for over a year. In October 16 i purchased two +2 kits. They were left loaded for 2 months. Ive honestly never had any problems with them. Installation can be tricky as it is easy to make a mistake which could cause malfunctions. The mags have cycled several hundred round each. I use them for the range as well as duty mags. I would suggest buying a set and trying it out for yourself.

Guys,
I've been following reports of bent mag spring in shields since 2012 if I remember. There is no way they had one bad batch of springs and still having this issue show up from 2012 to today.

Has anyone tried to put a spring in backwards and see if that is what does it?

I have older shield mags (2015) with a finish that is matte kind of like the grayish described above. I have a new shield PC (2016) with springs that are yellowish. I loaded all of my mags many times and unloaded them each time without having anything bend....
