Shield Mag Spring Problem - UPDATE 1-21-17

Hi all. I have been a Glock guy my whole life and just recently picked-up a new Shield in 9mm. What a fantastic carry gun! However, I did have a problem.

After my second range session I took the 7 round mag apart and cleaned it. When I reloaded it, it would only take 5 rounds and felt "funny" while reloading. I took it apart again and the spring was severely bent at the small coil/big coil junction. I did some research on the web and there were several other Shield owners who encountered the exact same problem. S&W told them it was a batch of bad spring and sent them a new spring.

I also contacted S&W customer service regarding my mag spring and they also told me it was a batch of bad springs. They are sending me a new spring. As the Shield is my carry gun, I am seriously concerned and am wondering if there truly was a bad batch of springs or if this is a potential design defect of these mag springs. Thoughts?

Also, has anyone tried the Magguts generation 2 spring? This is the spring that is Z shaped as opposed to coiled. I have attached a picture. Results?

Thanks in advance,
Frank

UPDATE 1-21-17:

So S&W sent me 2 new mag springs and I received them today. They are the same coil shape as the defective springs, but they are a little different in color. They are more grayish, while the defective springs were more copperish in color. I put them in my 7 and 8 round mags and loaded/unloaded them several times at home. No problems. I then took them to the range and put 50 rounds of my carry ammo and 50 rounds of target ammo through them. Again, no problems. Looks like S&W was correct about a bad batch of mag springs, and kudos to their customer service for getting my the replacement springs so quickly.

Regards,
Frank A.

Yep, the 7 round spring S&W curse. Problem is, S&W will send you the same dam`d spring that went bad in the first place.
My advice, and you can do what you want, buy a couple extra 8 rounders and toss the 7 rounder.

As for magguts... i`m not a fan of their products... i`ll just leave it at that, because their are people on this forum that like magguts stuff.

I got rid of the springs in the Shield mags. I replaced three with MagGuts and they have been flawless. I changed the other ones with gunsprings.com springs. There is an issue with Shield Springs

All my shields (40 and 45) are ran with the extended mags.
All flush mags were sold or traded as soon as purchased guns.
Never even loaded or shot by me.
So I cant comment on issue.
I can say I NEVER have had a single issue with the 9 extended mags I have for the two guns.

Yes, Three of them. 100 rounds out of each, no issues (9mm). My question is long term functionality for carry. Right now they are just for range, I have them all loaded through the winter and will be doing reliability checks again in spring.

I guess I'm just lucky.

No mag spring problems at all, including the seven rounders.

Rick...
Every one of my shield 7 rounders had spring issues... bent right over where the smaller part of the spring turns into the larger part of the spring. They actually jammed up and wouldn`t feed when the spring collapsed. Thats what happens when you try to make a single stack mag into a semi-single/double stack, and then try to make the spring look like the mag. The smaller end of the spring has no support or guide to hold it in place. And i believe S&W uses`s the same spring for both the 7rd & 8rd mags. The 7rd mag spring is stressing at the weak area where the spring changes size just down from the follower... Thats where its collapsing. Have you noticed that the 8rd loads easier than the 7rd...??? Same 8rd spring in the 7rd shorter compartment.

I purchased my 9mm Shield with factory night sights and it came with 3 magazines, one 7 and two 8's. Guess I'm also one of the lucky ones. To date I have 750 rounds through my Shield, no issues with loading magazines, or function of the pistol.

I had the Maggots Z-shaped spring fail on me while at the range. Took it out and put the stock spring back in and left the bottom plate on for a +1 extension.

I`m betting the maggot Z spring broke right at one of the bends...?

Didn't break...just folded in half. It stopped shooting and when I pulled the magazine the remaining bullets were down inside the magazine. Reinstalled the spring per Maggots instructions and happened again. This was on the 7rd mag and didn't test it on the 8rd mag.
