There is an increase in weight and the ability to fine tune your spring combination to suit your needs.

The Shield has also been known to fail at the RSA. I have seen different variations of failures and personally witnessed the RSA on a BNIB Shield separate from the retaining disc at the muzzle end during fire. For some, it is a reliability "peace of mind" item.

I personally have not had an issue to warrant it, but I certainly wouldn't mind it.

Their design isn`t new, its been around for a very long time.
As long as you have the correct pound spring, they`ll work perfect.
If the spring is to light, it`ll batter your frame, can also cause feeding issues. (might move to fast to strip a round from the mag)
If the spring is to heavy, it wont allow the slide to move rearward enough to strip the next round from the mag.
And if you go with a single spring guide rod, you might feel more recoil... hence S&W 2 recoil spring design designed to soften recoil.
