Brand New Damaged 9mm Shield

I received my Shield 9 late this afternoon and was excited to get it. What a nice pistol and nearly identical to the 40 I already had. I found that it had minor damage when I field stripped it to clean it. The rear most end of the recoil guide rod rim is bent. I think the last coil on the larger spring that rests against that part is slightly bent as well. I field stripped my 40 just to compare the guide rod and spring and, sure enough...it's damaged.

I called S&W immediately and he was surprised at the damage I described. I offered to send pics, but he said it was a pain to receive emails with attachments and he took my word for it. He's going to send me the entire recoil spring assembly. He said it wouldn't harm anything to put it together and fire it as long as I put the bent part away from the rest it sits on. I haven't fired it yet but will soon.

Of the many, many S&W guns I've owned, this is the first issue with quality, but I guess it happens to the best of them.

Good to hear that S&W CS is taking care of you. They usually do a good job.

A couple years ago, when there was a rash of bent RSAs, it was found that many instances occurred when people complaining that the Shield would not go back together easily, would use extreme force to rack the slide back, which (if the RSA was not positioned properly) caused the bent rear end of the RSA. It's possible that someone prior to your purchase field stripped the pistol, could not get the slide locked back during assembly and 'forced' the slide back, bending the RSA.

As berettabone alluded to... The possibility of bent parts & defects is why I inspect every firearm I buy before letting them put the serial number on the form 4473.

I had a gunshop question me when I opened up the box and checked the gun, thinking there was a lack of trust. I countered with a story from my old gun shop days. Somewhere in shipping, a gun was removed from a box and replaced with a couple of bricks that weighed about as much as the Remington rifle that should have been in there.
