In your reply to USMC1963 You said it can be figured out by the Serial Number. That's the last 4 numbers.
There's 3 letters before the numbers. Last 4 numbers in the SN# are 7681

The Serial # has nothing to do with the manufacture date of a Shield.
In the pic I attached, the number that I circled that's under the SKU is the manufacture code.
For Shields made in 2012 and early 2013, it's a 4 digit code, where the 1st digit represents the last digit of the Year (in my case, the 2 represents 2012) and the last 3 digits represent how many days into that year (in my case, the 122nd day into 2012).
For those made after Mid 2013, it's a simple 6 digit code ( I think MMDDYY configuration).

Just like the one I posted above.

Right. I was trying to say you can't pull that date from my serial number ending in 7681.

Oh that one is obvious, it was made in the 76th week of 1981, or the alternate is the 81st week of 1776?

So, did S&W stop shipping wiht those, or stop firing a test rounds, or did my new gun somehow come without?

I suppose I can email Smith, but wondered if anyone here with a Shield 9 could shed some light.
Manufacturers aren't required to provide the fired shell casing any more; but you can make your own and put it in the box if you'd like...
