Should new Shield 9 come with a factory fired round?

I got my new 9mm Shield from Grab-a-Gun a week ago, and am very happy with it. I was perusing Arms List, and saw one for sale, and the photo included the typical envelope that the factory test round comes in, and I thought, "hey, I don't remember seeing one in my box." And, I didn't get one.

So, did S&W stop shipping wiht those, or stop firing a test rounds, or did my new gun somehow come without?

I suppose I can email Smith, but wondered if anyone here with a Shield 9 could shed some light.

There were a few states that required a fired case be included with each new pistol, by their view this would be some kind of miracle crime prevention and a tool for solving gun crimes. After a number of years somebody finally realized that that had never solved a crime, and had never even been used in a single investigation. So after millions of dollars thrown in the trash can to please gun control nuts, the states involved finally decided they had a better place to waste their money on.

So...no more fired cases to come with new firearms, but all S&W pistols are test fired at the factory, they just don't include a test shell anymore. One of the rare times when a little logic finally prevailed.

Yes... Kudos on those few States no longer requiring the fired case... But it sure was a lot easier to tell someone to 'look at the test fire case envelope' to see when their pistol was made, rather than explaining which set of numbers on the box's label was the manufacture code.

Should new Shield 9 come with a factory fired round?

I always wonder why it really matters?
I consider the day I purchase it as its BOD if I am buying new.
Buying used unless it is of some significance then it is not all that important to me.

I have tracked down the approx. yr of mfg of some of my grandpas guns and thats close enuf.

A lot of Glock owners really like to know from what I've read in Glock forums. They've even made up a database on one forum.More extensive for the Generations 1-3.
I Just like knowing. Always have.
One forum says you can tell by the last 4 numbers of you Serial # like HHJ7691 How IDK but it worked on that persons M&P 9c. His had lower numbers like 1256 and they said it was the 256th day of 2011.
Mine would not work out that way because theres not 691 days in a year...LOL

There is a number on the label of the box 012417 leaving me to believe it's Jan. 24th 2017

Did you try to call S&W to see if they could tell you by your specific serial number...?

True but I can't make personal calls at work and no cellphones allowed plus I work 6-6. By the time I get home they're closed.

I live in South Carolina and neither of my M&P Shields or M&P M2.0 when purchased new none came with spent casings. All my manufacture dates our on the labels.
Example 083116 August 31, 2016

The spent case thing is just that... all it does is tell you "when" the gun was fired, it does not tell you when the gun was actually built...sorry to bust the bubblegum birthday bubble. Guns can sit on a "waiting-to-test" shelf quite awhile before they are even test fired.

"083116" is when the gun was packaged in the gun box.
Your serial number is proof of birthday.
