NEW GUY day at the range

new shield 9mm like to shoot this gun! have fired 500 rd of 115 g freedom munition new ammo. today shot 124 hp freedom munition new 150 rd and 50 rd of 115g I could tell the 124g had less kick I like that. no problems with shield, today however with the 124g slide did not stay open on last shot. it is not a problem for me but could the ammo 124g not have the power to keep it open? any feed back welcome enjoy the forum

Welcome!

The key to the slide locking open after the last shot is very simple, the ammo must push the slide to the rear far enough to engage the catch, if it doesn't, it won't lock open. So that pretty well confirms your observation about the heavier bullet having a lighter recoil.

The OTHER key to the slide locking open, is ensuring that your thumb is not impinging on the Slide Lock Lever. I've (personally) never had any problems with FM's 124gr having enough force to engage the Slide Stop on the last round. I believe it uses the same amount of gunpouder as the 115gr ammo (just the heavier bullet), but I could be incorrect.

I HAVE though, had the slide fail to lock back a few times, after the last round, due to my thumb inadvertently being on the Slide Stop lever.

I shoot Blazer 124, Aguila 124,American Eagle 124, and Lawman 124 through my shield at the range all the time. I've yet to have any issues with any of these 4 brands of ammo. Tula, and magtech/ 115 are a different story however. The magtech 124 is ok , their 115 (and Aguila 115) tend to be unevenly powered in their boxes.
I've had several FTE's with both brands at 115, their 124 is fine. the Tula just jams the crap out of my shield so I steer clear.
