Brand new 9mm Shield will not go into battery

Got home with my brand new M&P 9mm Shield - I loaded up a magazine and tried to put the gun into battery. The slide would not go all the way forward.

I called S&W Customer Support - their idea was to clean the gun since I hadn't done it yet. I cleaned the gun. (It wasn't dirty - no grease or gunk in the chamber). I asked the customer support rep if they test fire every gun at the factory, which he said they do - 2 mags worth. I'm not sure how they test fired this one?

I think they didn't machine the chamber deep enough so when the shell casing seats, it's not in deep enough.

Does anyone know how deep it should be?

S&W has told me to ship it to them and they will look at it. I'm dropping it off at Fed Ex today - probably going to have to wait 3-4 weeks to get it back.

Pictures of the issue:

Every gun is test fired at the factory, they don't sample, every single one is tested.

You didn't mention what ammo you are using, and the issue you show is ammo related most of the time, ammo out of spec. Looking at your photos the cartridge isn't as deep as it should be.

I might also suggest you check out the posted instructions on posting photos, the "Manage Attachments" method is preferred.

Everyone thinks it's the ammo. I tried 3 different brands - Remington, UMC an some Korean stuff. Same result. And each cartiridge was the same length.

Everyone ignores the fact that I measure the throat depth in the chamber and it does not appear to be the correct depth.

Does anyone know how deep the throat should be in the chamber?

No this isn't my first rodeo and I'm not a n00b.

Carry on.

Main point is we don't know if you don't tell us, we get a TON of newbies on here with a wide variety of questions, most of which could be served by reading the directions, and many ammo issues come back to 'that ammo I bought in a plastic sack at the gun show' that won't fit in their chamber, and if it did they still probably shouldn't shoot it in their pistol.

If I am reading your linear caliper correct you are measuring a 380 chamber?

its been a few years since I have read a Linear caliper, and I am not exactly sure what you are measuring. I assume you are taking a depth reading from the face of the chamber to the ledge where the brass comes in contact to the barrel.

What measurement are you taking in your 8th picture? Was it .591

Here is what I got trying to measure from the face to the ledge before the leade.

Okay, this may seem like a silly question.

Are you easing the slide close or letting it close on its own?

I only ask because I saw a guy at the range having similar issues and noticed he was easing the slide close. I suggested to him he let the slide close on its own... Problem solved.

It looks like they skipped using the finish reamer.

Not sure how they'd have done any test firing like that.

Every M&P I have was definitely dirty from test firing, but anything's possible...

Big Bang, thanks for posting your picture and measurement. That is the same measurement I took and mine is short. Here's a quick sketch of what Big Bang and I are talking about - my throat depths is measuring .595" , 15.1mm and should it be about 1mm deeper, I think:

I remeasured my barrel today .608 and measured new Hornady ammo case length .750 and measured the amount of brass protruding from the barrel face .142.

.750 - .608 = .142

You should be very close to these measurements or you have a problem.

The barrel I have measured is a full size but these measurements should be the same for all 9mm

What a screw up in so many ways and over many work benches! I wonder if a .380 reamer was used? If I had some .380 I'd put one in to see if it chambers. Maybe you have a one off .380 auto mistake.

Contact S&W. They'll take care of it.

How could they have test fired it out of battery? That makes no sense to me.
