Best-Selling Author Brad Meltzer Reveals President Ronald Reagan’s ‘Biggest Secret’

Best-selling author Brad Meltzer might write some thrilling novels, but what he says he learned about President Ronald Reagan from the Secret Service on a visit to its headquarters is apparently no work of fiction.

Calling it the late president’s “biggest secret,” Meltzer revealed that Reagan was, at times, reportedly packing heat – a .38 handgun to be exact.

In a post for the New York Daily News, Meltzer wrote that he was touring the headquarters of the agency devoted to protecting the nation’s top leaders for his latest novel “The President’s Shadow,” which hits shelves this week. There he saw a replica of the rifle Lee Harvey Oswald used to shoot President John F. Kennedy, the pistol fired at President Gerald R. Ford and the limo door that was on the vehicle Reagan was walking toward in 1981 when John Hinckley Jr., attempted to assassinate him.

“It was an eerie keepsake for sure,” Meltzer wrote. “But not nearly as eerie as the next detail they told me. We were talking about Reagan and that day he was shot. Then one of the agents offered this secret: When Reagan was president, he carried his own gun. I couldn’t believe it.”

And yet.
“Whatever you think of Reagan, you have to admit, he had a black belt in badassery,” Meltzer continued.

I know this isn't specifically a M&P topic although it could have been a M&P revolver, I felt it was so interesting it deserved a wider audience than offered by other areas like the Off Topic Forum.

That's no secret to the folks that knew him. Early 1940's he got permission from studio police to carry his .32 S&W on movie sets, didn't really care what folks thought of it either. Errol Flynn reportedly carried a gun that Ron may have given him a couple years earlier, and Humphrey Bogart occasionally carried, but only admitted to it a couple times. Ron kept his favorite semi-auto, a 1934 Walther PPK .380, in his briefcase toward the end of his movie career, during his governorship, and throughout his presidency. He may have had a .38 on him at the same time, several folks were aware that he kept one in his nightstand for most of his adult life. There was rumor of an accidental discharge in the residence, middle of his first term, but no one has ever confirmed it (for obvious reasons).

Edit: Thought the AD was in the West Wing, checked my source and she corrected me.

What would we be discussing regarding these terrorist if we had Reagan in white house now instead of the spineless apologetic wonder we have.

How the world would be different.
